A couple weeks ago in Dijon, France, the Consortium Museum opened the first ever institutional exhibition devoted to Emily Mae Smith. Bringing together about forty artworks made between 2014 and 2018 from private collections, the show gives a nice overview of the American artist’s recent output. On January 11th, Urban Spree Galerie in Berlin will be hosting the opening of Futura: The 5 Elements. Recap: Okuda – “The Plastic Island” @ Mirus Gallery (Denver)

Today marks the last day of Okuda’s solo show at Denver’s Mirus Gallery entitled The Plastic Island. Including logos of corporations and brands with his signature characters in colorful compositions, the Spanish artist takes aim at the role of plastics in our consumerist society and its deleterious effects on the environment. Working with the geometric patterned style and vibrant palette that has become his trademark, the new body of work features both paintings and sculptural pieces that event incorporate actual plastic products. On January 12th, Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting another new body of work from Kazuki Takamatsu in their Downtown Los Angeles showspace. The Way To Release From The Restraint features the Japanese artist’s surreal imagery created with his unique monochromatic depth mapping technique, starting digitally and ending with hand painting. His precociously seductive characters, mixed with symbols of death & violence, balance between the worlds of kawaii and darker themes.
