Age of Empire, a new solo from Andrew Schoultz opened last week at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York. The exhibition features painting and work on paper referencing patterns in history like war, natural disasters, and globalization as well as social, political, and economic crises. The detailed pieces included in the show are his instantly recognizable collage – like compositions, filled with chaotic explosions of color and imagery, and are accompanied by a site-specific installation.
Schoultz further explains the installation – “Perhaps the standing pillar works under the theme that after all, it is still standing. Or perhaps it could allude to the idea that there is just one more pillar to destroy. Destruction is often referred to as something negative, however—sometimes in history—the preexisting structure has become so bad that it needs to be destroyed in order to build something new. We have seen this theme occur in history many times.”
