Currently in London, Kehinde Wiley has a powerful new show on view at the Stephen Friedman Gallery entitled In Search Of The Miraculous. Diverging a bit from his signature portraiture, the American artist has painted seascapes for his new body of work with references to the current migrant crisis and to the dark history of slavery. Continuing his practice of posing urban youths in place of the usual subjects in classic master paintings, Wiley has chosen to remix favorites from art history ranging from 17th-century Dutch nautical painting to JMW Turner. Rounding out the exhibition and running in the space is a look at his first film.
