Recently in Shenzhen, China, Thomas Canto installed a reflective sculpture on top of a private building entitled Gravitational Inertia Infinity. The piece is the first in a new series of works that the French artist plans to explore in the coming months and continues his play with depth, geometry and illusion. Thomas Canto recently introduced his latest big project, the Illusory Perspectives installation at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. This large installation continues his series of futuristic aesthetics-oriented works which combine urban and geometrical elements in an eclectic abstract form. Mixing painted patterns with actual objects and a grid of both lines and threads installed in the space, the French artist creates a multidimensional work that plays with observers’ perspectives. Later this month (November 21st), Wunderkammern in Rome will be presenting new works from Thomas Canto, his first solo in Italy. Not one to be constricted by the confines of the traditional canvas, the French artist’s abstract but precise works often feature nylon strings or wall painting that extend past the frame extending the geometries of his artistic vision. Thomas Canto recently created a futuristic installation inside of one of the rooms at the Vieux Panier Hotel in Marseilles. This small hotel is built in an old Corsican grocery shop, and it has five unique rooms, each designed in a different style by a contemporary artist for a period of one year. Over the weekend, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented new works from L’Atlas & Canto collectively entitled PARALLELS. Aptly named, the exhibition not only refers the nationality of the two French artists, but the similarities in their aesthetic that both involve abstraction, precise patterning, and geometric tendencies. The series of paintings and installations they produced do pair nicely when viewed together and certainly show that the two have come far since their time on the streets. Last week, alongside Nagel, Ramirez, and Nehrbass in the main gallery, Lindsey Carr’s newest work graced the walls the Thinkspace’s project room. Entitled Homage to Canton, the new paintings resembled classic botanical illustrations, but for the unnatural yet interesting ways the Scotland-based artist melded fauna and flora. Scotland-based artist Lindsey Carr, who we have seen in multiple group shows in the past, will be bringing a full set of paintings for her solo at Thinkspace in September. Entitled Homage to Canton, the new body of work will feature her retro-feel illustrations of flora and fauna like the great John James Audubon but with a surreal touch like Scott Musgrove as some of what she paints won’t be found in nature.
