Releases: Eric Fortune – “Comfort in Dying” Print

If you follow Eric Fortune (interviewed) on his blog and his YouTube page, you will know that he sometime shares the interesting process behind some of his paintings. One of these that he recently wrote about is entitled Comfort in Dying and is also available as a print through INPRNT. On April 5th, the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting new works from Daniel Arsham entitled Kick the Tires and Light the Fires. The American artist is known for his sculptural “relics” that take modern items and recreates it in such a way that makes it appear as it would if found in the future as part of an archeological dig as well as works based off himself that resemble the victims of Pompeii. Last month, the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland hosted a two person show from Erin Murray & Tristram Lansdowne (interviewed) entitled Order of Operations. Although the two artists’ imagery are worlds apart, a common theme of appreciation for architectural forms runs throughout their work – Lansdowne with his unnatural blending of natural landscapes and structures (although not as evident in this body of work) and Murray with her intriguing renderings on shaped canvases. POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Andrew Schoultz & Hannah Stouffer

Another collaboration that grabbed our attention during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii was a long joint mural from Andrew Schoultz and Hannah Stouffer. The waves and kinetic imagery from Schoultz provided a nice contrast to the softer forest renderings and volcanic eruptions of Stouffer, providing an interesting continous landscape for the people who pass by in the industrial district of Kaka’ako. It looks like Takashi Murakami has been by to check out the setup of Yoshitomo Nara’s new solo show at Blum & Poe, and so should you tomorrow night (March 1st) when it opens (6-8pm). This latest exhibition will be the seventh one with the Los Angeles showspace and will feature lush new paintings, large-scale bronze sculptures, and a survey of approximately two hundred drawings made over the last thirty years. Scott Campbell’s second showing with Galerie Gmurzynska’s St. Moritz (Via Serias) location recently opened, giving his fans in Switzerland a chance to admire a diverse range of works. The Smartest Thing I Ever Did Were Foolish Things For Love is dedicated to the theme of love, no doubt inspired by his recent marriage. Paintings, sculptures, cut currency works, as well as “fuse paintings,” which are created by drawing with gunpowder and then ignited, fill the space with examples of the Brooklyn-based artist’s recent creative output and “love statements.” […]

A couple weekends ago, old friends RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota opened up a show together at the Corey Helford Gallery. Displaying their collaborative efforts (like the paintings seen in 2011 in LA & SF), the two artists put together a cohesive new body of work that features RISK’s deconstructive color washes & lettering along with Ota’s surreal characters. Openings: Greg Eason – “Four Fish of the Apocalypse” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery welcomed in several artists to display their works at the Portland showspace. One of these was the London-based Greg Eason, who made the trip over personally to present his detailed graphite drawings. The series of works were collectively entitled Four Fish of the Apocalypse, and use carefully selected images to illustrate his version of some of the Book of Revelation (Chapter 6 of the King James Bible).
