Entitled Living Clay, the exhibition sees the Hong Kong-based ceramic artist present a full repertoire of works at the Yingge Ceramics Museum including his whimsical takes on functional objects with characters in fluid play with the forms. Openings: Alex Lukas – “Prints & Photographs; Copies & Concrete” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Last week, Alex Lukas opened his solo show in Portland at the Breeze Block Gallery entitled Prints & Photographs; Copies & Concrete. To see the Chicago-based artist’s work in person is to see someone take printmaking to the next level in terms of incorporating the practice into art making. To learn more, take time to read an interview we conducted with Lukas leading up to the show. Then, check out the post-apocalyptic imagery created for this new show in the photos below featuring submerged cities, urban landscapes ablaze, and abandoned structures […]

Videos: David Cata Sews Portraits Into His Hand

David Cata is a multidisciplinary artist from Spain who recently created a series of works where he sewed portraits of people who have left a mark on his life into the palm of his hand. Overexposed Emotions is kind of an autobiographical diary featuring faces of family, friends, partners, teachers, and others interwoven into his body just like their lives have been interwoven his own. The process mimics interactions and possibilities in real life when dealing with others including “union, separation, pain and love.” Take a […]

Banksy’s “Heart Balloon” Sells for $650K to Coldplay’s Martin

One of the iconic images from Banksy’s historic artist residency on the streets of New York last year was the so called Heart Balloon (later jacked and displayed during Basel Week Miami). A variation on this piece as seen recently as a print for sale on Paddle8, but it has made a more high profile appearance over that weekend in the form of an original on wood that sold at Sean Penn’s Help Haiti Home Gala in Beverly Hills. Bought by Chris Martin from Coldplay with proceeds […]

On February 7th, Space 1026 in Philadelphia will be opening a solo show from Erin M Riley (interviewed) entitled Crimson Landslide. These new pieces from the young artist, who recently relocated to Brooklyn from Philly, will depict everyday objects and the detritus of female identity like toiletries, birth control pills, and more. We have seen imagery like this before from Riley, nice companion pieces to her signature weavings of nude or scantily clad young women portraits, but this will be the first time these type of […]

Upcoming: Li Hongbo – “Tools Of Study” @ Klein Sun Gallery

During Art Basel Week in Miami, one of the artists that caught our attention was Li Hongbo and his flexible paper sculptures. Represented by the Klein Sun Gallery at Art Miami & CONTEXT, the Chinese artist and former book editor presented pieces that look like solid and often created in a classic style, yet when stretched, the entire concept that the viewer had of his work is flipped upside down. For those in New York who are interested, he’ll be opening a new show tonight at Klein Sun […]
