Streets: Os Gemeos – Nelson Mandela Tribute

With the recent passing of Nelson Mandela, the world mourns the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary who had become an inspiration to the oppressed everywhere. His views and life seem to align with philosophies of many street artists out there who create work along the same lines with the themes Mandela supported. Os Gemeos recently posted up a tribute piece they did with a caption and quote – “Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions […]

Openings: Mike Leavitt – “Empire Peaks” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York to check out a new showing from Mike Leavitt (interviewed) entitled Empire Peaks. Showing alongside Riusuke Fukahori’s work, which also had a three-dimensional feel to it, the new body of work from the Seattle-based Leavitt featured a mashup of historical figures and Star Wars characters, something we gave you a glimpse of in our earlier studio visit. Take a look at some photos of the new sculptures, like the Ghandi x Yoda figure above… Discuss Mike Leavitt here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: NADA Fair (Part I)

Another satellite fair we visited yesterday at Art Basel Week in Miami is the event put on by the New Art Dealers Alliance. The 11th Miami edition of the NADA fair included more than 90 galleries and was held at the Deauville Beach Resort. Their growing list of exhibitors include some familar names like The Hole, Andrew Edlin, Marlborough Chelsea, and Bill Brady KC (seen above with some nice Michael Manning paintings). Discuss Art Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’13 / Streets: “Women on the Walls” (Wynwood) – Part I

For those street art fans down in Miami for Art Basel Week, you may want to head over to the Wynwood district for the new outdoor mural project. Women on the Walls features work by Aiko (seen above), Miss Van, Fafi, Maya Hayuk, Lady Pink, and Olek in the Wynwood Walls compound. Also included are Faith47, Kashink, Lakwena, and Sheryo who will be painting new walls in the adjacent area. Along with all these artists, Clay Money, Jess & Katie, Myla, Shamsia Hassani, and Toofly will be participating […]

Collections: KAWS, Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, & Ugo Rondinone

Ever wonder what the art collections of artists hold? The New York Times’ T Magazine answers this question for four artists that you may have heard of before – KAWS, Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, and Ugo Rondinone. Take a look at more photos below as well as head over to the article for more information as the artists were asked to talk more about the pieces they own and their collecting philosophies. Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Revival” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The Joshua Liner Gallery in New York recently opened a solo exhibition from Kris Kuksi entitled Revival. The intricate and complex sculptural works from the Kansas-based artist plays a perfect contrast to the deceptively simple works from Riusuke Fukahori, who is concurrently showing in the same gallery. Kuksi’s mixed media assemblages explore the dark sides of the human psyche with ornate representations created from model kits and other materials that he has re-appropriated. His works need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated, but for those unable […]

Streets: D*Face (Tokyo)

The UK-based D*Face (interviewed) is currently in Japan to promote his new book – The Art of D*Face: One Man and His Dog. To that end, he will be holding a signing event (tonight) and show at Parco Gallery X in Tokyo where he will also be releasing a Japanese flag version print (seen below).  Of course, while in town, he also took time to work on a mural (located in Shibuya). Photos via Mura. Discuss D*Face here.

Releases: Tiffany Bozic – “Strigiformes” Print

In association with her recent showing at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery in San Francisco, Tiffany Bozic has released a print entitled Strigiformes. The striking image of a series of overlapping owls is a reproduction of a painting from the exhibition and is available now. It will be produced in a run of 100, is sized at 20″ x 16.5″ (12″ x 16″ image), and cost $165. Head over here if you want to add this to your collection. Discuss Tiffany Bozic here.

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Falling Back to Earth” @ Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)

As you probably surmised from our comprehensive coverage of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exhibition in Los Angeles last year, we quite enjoy the Chinese artist’s explosive techniques and inventive installations. That’s why if you will be near Queensland in the coming months, you need to make time to stop by Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Although there are other works in the show like Head On, a stream of suspended wolves, the highlight of the show is a new installation piece entitled Heritage. Although the message of the piece featuring a […]

Openings: Riusuke Fukahori – “The Painted Breath” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last month, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea presented all new works from Yokohama-based artist Riusuke Fukahori in his New York solo debut. The self-described goldfish fanatic keeps many of them around his studio for inspiration as well as considers them a metaphor for his life. Utilizing a resin technique that took over 8 years to perfect, the layered pieces almost look too real to be paintings, especially when presented in containers that are often associated with the fish in real life. Take a look at more photos as well […]
