Streets: Belin (New York)

Last week, Spanish street artist Belin finished a mural on the exterior of the future superclub Space New York. Featuring his surreal vision and caricature like characters, the large wall can be seen from the West Side Highway. Take a look below at some in progress photos as well as some shots of his hybrid winged creatures and other details…

Showing: Justin Bower – “Panic Room” @ Unix Gallery

Currently showing in New York is Justin Bower’s new solo show at the Unix Gallery entitled Panic Room. The Los Angeles-based painter is presenting a new collection of large scale work featuring his multi-layered and frenetic portraiture. The surreal faces portrayed look like they have been taken from glitchy TV monitors with their faces vacillating between various emotions, embellished and broken up with artificial geometric artifacts. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Justin Bower here.

Openings: Adam Wallacavage – “Magic Mountain” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, AM stopped by the currently running show from Adam Wallacavage (interviewed) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Magic Mountain features the Philadelphia-based artist’s surreal mixed media sculptures and functional art objects as well as some pieces inspired and cast from vintage toys in his personal collection. In addition, a limited edition Octopus Tentacle Candlestick was made available for purchase. Take a look at all our photos below… Discuss this show here. Discuss Adam Wallacavage here.

Previews: SHAG – “Pink Elephants” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Later this month, November 23rd to be exact, the Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting a new solo show from SHAG (interviewed). The fresh paintings play on the phrase Pink Elephants, first coined by Jack London in 1913 to describe the hallucinations experienced from excessive alcohol consumption. He recently had to cut himself off as he found that it was interfering with his work ethic. So in it’s place, he has continued to expanded on the imagery of his characters enjoying their drink, part of the hip […]

Openings: Travis Louis – “Strange Discoveries” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Over the weekend, fans in Los Angeles were once again able to enjoy a new body of work from Travis Louie (interviewed) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. It’s been couple years since his last showing at the space (see 2011), but the paintings and drawings for Strange Discoveries were well worth the wait. Dedicated to his father who recently passed away, the exhibition featured Louie’s signature dignified portraiture of surreal creatures rendered amazingly to look like vintage photos. Take a look at more shots of the opening below… Photo […]

Streets: Mark Jenkins (Munich)

Continuing their mission of supporting socio-political art in urban spaces, Positive-Propaganda has arranged for another public work in Munich. The eye-catching piece from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) features one of his signature tape sculpture mannequins playing a giant game of tic-tac-toe on the facade of the Social Welfare Office in the German city’s Westend. Take a look at more photos below and if you are interested in this series of work, also check out murals from Aryz and KRIPOE. Photo credit: Positive-Propaganda. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.

Dave Cooper x Johnny Ryan – “Pig Goat Banana Cricket” TV Series

The Canada-based Dave Cooper, who we last saw during a New York solo show, recently made the trip to Los Angeles to do more work on his recently green-lighted animated series with Nickelodeon. Pig Goat Banana Cricket was developed with Cooper in charge of art direction with Johnny Ryan writing for the children’s network, who have ordered 26 episodes to begin with. As you can see from the lush backgrounds and character design (better seen in pilot video below – note cricket exchanged for mantis), Cooper’s influence is definitely evident. […]

Streets: Faile (New York)

Last month, AM stopped by the original Record Plant in New York to check out the largest outdoor mural to date from Faile (featured). Designed by the Patrick’s and painted by Colossal Media, the massive piece on the side of the building in Hell’s Kitchen features some of the collective’s signature imagery. Take a look at more detailed photos below… Discuss Faile here.

Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery. Take a look at more opening photos below… Discuss Masakatsu Sashie here.

Streets: Invader (New York)

With the special screening of ART4SPACE (covered) for Invader’s fans in New York City last month, you would expect the secretive street artist to also make an appearance. As evidenced by the fresh public works, including the appearance of new video game characters and other pop icons, Invader made the most of his time while in the Big Apple. In addition to a collaboration (seen below) with the legendary NY graffiti artist  COST and partner ENX, Invader also had a run-in with the NYPD. Take a look at more photos […]
