Previews: Laurent Chéhère – “Flying Houses” @ Muriel Guépin Gallery

For his first solo show in the US, Laurent Chéhère will be presenting his Flying Houses series at the Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York. Set to open on the first of November, the exhibition will introduce New Yorkers to the French photographer’s surreal floating structures and altered realities. Last month, The Adventures Of Raspberry Finn opened at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City featuring new paintings from Kukula. Taking inspirations from various sources like famous fictional characters and the fashion of Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko, the LA-based artist created new renderings of her sultry female characters. At the end of last month, photographer Tim Barber returned to Japan for a third solo show (see 2011) at Yuka Tsuruno Gallery. Relations see the New York-based artist present 23 previously unreleased works, a series of portraits, landscapes, and urban studies – all taken with a style he has become known for since his stint as the photo editor at Vice Magazine. Jeff Soto and Maxx242 in Luxembourg

Last month, Jeff Soto (interviewed) along his friend and fellow artist Maxx242 headed to Luxembourg for the Goodbye Monopol 2 event. Monopol was a much loved market chain that closed down a few years ago so organizers invited artists (some others were all ten of The Weird Crew, The London Police, Eyes-B, and Mr. X) to paint the old headquarters. For those who were busy over the weekend, here is a summary of the latest Banksy pieces for his Better Out Than In art residency in New York. In addition to street stencils, Mr. B also blessed the Big Apple with more “performance art” with a truck filled with animated stuffed animals heading for the slaughter house (see video below). Last month, AM paid a visit to the Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York to take in a new solo show from Brian Adam Douglas (interviewed), otherwise known as Elbow-Toe. Utilizing a painstaking process involving shards of cut paper in place of brush strokes, the resulting art works are amazingly textural and complex. Tonight in San Francisco, Michael Page (interviewed) will be opening his solo at the Shooting Gallery. We visited his showing at the same space last year, so we are looking forward to seeing how his work has progressed for The Places We’ll Go. Featuring a psychedelic mix of colors and surreal imagery, the new acrylic and oil paintings infuse the mind of the viewer with Page’s vibrant aesthetic. This weekend (Saturday and Sunday), the fourth edition of the Beyond Eden art fair is opening at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. Showing: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Submerged” @ Times Square (Hong Kong)

At the end of last month, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) unveiled a major installation and show at one of Hong Kong’s busiest thoroughfares – Time Square. Presented by LeBasse Projects, the project featured two large heads, recognizably from the LA-based artist’s imagery, as well as other surrounding Submerged sculptures.
