Videos: Robert Longo – “Man in the City” for NOWNESS

Earlier today, NOWNESS released a new video feature on American artist Robert Longo and his iconic charcoal drawings. Included in the footage is an interview with the NY-based painter where he touches on many topics including why he works in black & white, how he made it big with his Man in the City imagery, how to stay relevant as an artist gets older, and the idea of truth. Tomorrow night in Beverly Hills (June 19th 6-8pm), the Lladró Boutique will be holding a release party for the Gary Baseman (interviewed) designed version of their Guest porcelain figure. Next Saturday night (June 22nd), the Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting a new show from Peter Chan. For his first solo with the gallery and in the United States, the Toronto-based artist has created a series of works collectively entitled Soliloquy, a fitting title considering the introspective contemplations he had while producing these paintings (see statement below). Streets: DALeast (Vienna)

The prolific artist DALeast has struck again, this time in Vienna. The South Africa-based Chinese artist painted a mural that draws from his roots as the title of this latest piece is “-“, the a character that means “one” in Chinese. Painted over some scattered graffiti, the work featuring his animal characters rendered with his kinetic brushstrokes blends in nicely with the wall. David Choe for Fin Bec

David Choe, who will be releasing a print on Monday, also worked in Switzerland on an art and wine project called myFINBEC last year. The award winning winery, Cave Fin Bec, brought together eight graffiti artists to paint on large wooden canvases constructed from 84 wine crates. These were then dismantled into their individual parts and filled with six bottles of wine with the artwork adorning each one. His nostalgic representations of these action figures from his past are set against backgrounds and patterns taken from fabric, rug, or wallpaper from his home while growing up. This elevation of these mass produced items with a reverence and almost talismanic obsession is an ironic metaphor for the consumer addiction seen today.
