Art Focus: Yao Lu

Our latest Art Focus article introduces the work of Chinese photographer Yao Lu. In particular, his latest series of digitally modified photographs entitled New Landscapes caught our eye – featuring transformed piles of garbage covered in green protective netting tricking the eye (with the placement of additional items) to see traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The work makes a powerful political statement as to the cost of the rapid urbanization of China juxtaposed against the beautiful scenery that has been lost forever because of said modern development. The LeBasse Projects in Culver City is currently showing works from Melissa Haslam collectively entitled Floating Garden. The new paintings included a series of patterned compositions created from botanical patterns as well as a set of portraits placing her characters entwined in an overgrowth of foliage. Streets: Interesni Kazki (India)

Ukranian duo Interesni Kazki have been splitting up recently on separate side trips, with each working on some of their own projects. This latest set of murals were painted by AEC in Varkala, a coastal town in India including the piece seen above – Fishing With The Sun. Currently showing at Thinkspace are paintings from Linnea Strid, part of a joint show entitled A Quiet Place with Stephanie Buer (see her works here). On display from Strid were her signature portraiture seen through her playful use of water as well as newer works that capture her characters in a moment of solitude or inner reflection. AM stopped by New Image Art yesterday to take in a new set of paintings from the the Brooklyn-based Paul Wackers. Early Romantics put on display Wacker’s modern take on still life painting with the inclusion of geometric and abstract elements added to the mix. On top of that, his inventive multi-method technique works extra layers into the composition (multiple components are created separately before assemblage). Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. Mark Ryden for the World Wildlife Fund

Gifted painter Mark Ryden recently created an exquisite new piece entitled Queen Bee. For those interested, the painting will go to a benefit auction for the World Wildlife Fund coming up this May.
