Preview: Travis Louie – “The Secret Pet Society” @ William Baczek Fine Arts

Following up on a showing in Seattle and Los Angeles last year, Travis Louie (interviewed) will continue exploring the idea of his Victorian friends and their unusual pets with a solo in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Secret Pet Society will open on May 2nd at William Baczek Fine Arts and will feature Travis’ distinctive and surreal way of painting his own interpretation of vintage photography. Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Hodgepodge” @ Honor Fraser

Last weekend, the distinctive stylings of Kenny Scharf (interviewed) were put on display at Honor Fraser in Los Angeles. Hodgepodge, his second showing at the gallery, features paintings, sculptures, a Cosmic Cavern installation, and a customized Cadillac, as well as an opening night performance by longtime friend and frequent collaborator, Ann Magnuson. Teaser: Shawn Barber – “Tattooed Portraits” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Coming up at the end of June, Joshua Liner will be hosting a new solo from Shawn Barber (interviewed). Featuring his Tattooed Portraits, this second showing (see 2010) with the New York gallery draws on his day job as a successful tattoo artist for inspiration on a series of rich oil paintings including a huge 72″ x 108″ piece of Japanese tattooist Shige. For those who missed the Simpsons last night, you might want to check out the video of the opening sequence above as acclaimed animator and cartoonist Bill Plympton was tapped to create the short. Joining other artists familiar to AM readers who have been involved in the show including Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf, Plympton used his distinctive style to put together a love affair between Homer and his couch.
