Streets: ROA (Gambia)

On a recent trip to Africa to participate in the Wide Open Walls project, the Belgium-based ROA’s animal repertoire took a decidedly more exotic turn. Featuring giraffes, zebras, elephants, monkeys, other common safari sightings, the anatomically-inclined street artist contributed walls to the project that promotes Gambia as a tourist destination. Perhaps that’s why he held back on the usual dissection and other mishaps that typically accompanies the creatures in his imagery. More photos from Ekosystem after the jump…

The Branded Arts sponsored project had Flores painting his signature style design on a big scale. Last time we saw Flores working on a wall, he took one of Phil Stern’s iconic images which featured James Dean. This time around Flores went a different route and created a rendering of […]

Openings: Zeng Fanzhi @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Since the Gagosian Gallery opened a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year, some international heavy hitters like Damien Hirst and Richard Prince have already graced their walls with solo shows. For their most recent exhibition, which opened a couple weeks ago, a more local star, Zeng Fanzhi, was the feature attraction. The retrospective draws from work in the last 20 years with some pieces culled from the Chinese artist’s personal collection, tracing his career of exploring the human figure with his powerfully introspective paintings. Showing: Adam Neate – “Dimensional Paintings” @ Elms Lester

Earlier this week, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for a set of new works collectively and aptly entitled Dimensional Paintings from the inventive Adam Neate (interviewed). While his landmark solo in 2009 at the same London gallery introduced his fans to the new textures and three-dimensional aspects of his new work, this latest exhibition shows a maturity, refinement, and comfort in the technique that is evident in the impressive depth and complexity of the pieces currently on view.
