Teaser: Travis Louie @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Here is a teaser photo for a show we are looking forward to in July at the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York.  Travis Louie (featured) will be bringing bearded, bewhiskered, and strangely botanical characters for a concurrent show with the talented Sylvia Ji (interviewed). Discuss Travis Louie here.

Preview: Dale Grimshaw – “Arcana” @ Signal Gallery

London artist Dale Grimshaw’s third solo exhibition, “Arcana”, will be showing at the Signal Gallery starting next weekend. For this new body of work, Grimshaw takes inspiration from the imagery of the Tarot, taking his figurative paintings in a new yet still emotive and raw direction. Fans of his mixture of the abstract and realistic work will want to be there for the opening on April 9th. Another preview image after the jump.

“Small Victories” Photo Project

Booooooom! is running a contest where readers can submit 4″ x 6″ photos about “the quietly beautiful, unintentionally funny, people and things all around us.” This will culminate in a show in May in Hong Kong with our friends at the Above Second Gallery. Full details on submissions here.

Overtime: March 28 – April 3

Looks like the Pop Life exhibition has moved on to Hamburg. The price of being on the board of a public arts institution. SFMOMA looking for an architect for a new extension. Stolen art! Speaking of which, Dennis Hopper’s wife sniped his Banksy. How do you “forget” the Ansel Adams murals in your collection? An exhibition of Andy Warhol’s photographs. Painted people as optical illusions by Alexa Meade. Nathan Ota and Eric Fortune at work. Stella Im Hultberg shows off more of her fantastic sketchbook. […]

Streets: Banksy Vs. Robbo Copycat?

Another turn of events in the Robbo and Banksy story was recently reported on Graffoto. It appears someone has again modified the four pieces by Banksy in Camden, but this time reversing much of what Robbo did. With Robbo recently escalating his “war” against other Banksy stencils outside of the Camden, there was speculation as to what Banksy’s response would be. With so much on his plate recently, and frankly, no need to respond to Robbo’s bravado, we are not sure Mr. B would take […]

Video: Mark Ryden – “Incarnation” Time Lapse

It’s always rare to see one of the masters at work. Here is a recent time lapse video released by Mark Ryden of his now famous “Incarnation” piece that was release as a print just this week and also the focus of his upcoming exhibition, “The Gay 90’s” at the end of the month at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York. Discuss Mark Ryden here.

Openings: Lola – “Ipsum Factum” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Lola’s newest solo, “Ipsum Factum”, opened recently at the Corey Helford Gallery in the heart of the Culver City art district. Bringing to fruition pieces that we saw her working on during our studio visit a while back, Lola’s attention to detail was most impressive. From the delicate hands and feet of the denizens of her world, to the tiny planes, to the miniature animals and insects, to the ever present origami – attendees could see that she put her all into this new body […]

Preview: Marco Zamora & Derek Albeck – “The Fool” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

The work of Los Angeles based artist Marco Zamora caught our eye recently as we noticed his show at Derek Albeck was opening soon. His imagery of urban landscapes and the people that inhabit it are done monochromatically with interspersed splashes of color, leading to a nice contrast. The show opens tonight, April 1st, at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery in SF so we look forward to seeing how this body of work turns out. Some additional preview images after the jump…

Preview: Showcase Series: San Francisco Group Exhibiton for LeBasse Projects

You may remember us posting some photos from Melissa Haslam’s studio a while back.  If you recall, the pieces seen were for the LeBasse Projects SF showcase pop-up show (opening tomorrow) including some gallery stalwarts along with Haslam like Yoskay Yamamoto (featured), Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), Andrew Hem (interviewed), Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Nate Frizzell (featured) along with some interesting additions – Herakut (interviewed) and Seonna Hong! See more preview pics of the gallery setup as well as details of the exhibition after the jump.

Sketchbook: Travis Louie

As we continue our series of sketchbook features, we move on to one of our favorite artists, Travis Louie (interviewed). Not only does Travis carry around a sketchbook full of his kick-ass sketches, he also has a journal where he writes the famous stories that go along with each of his paintings. Unbeknownst to most fans, the stories are written first and the paintings are based on ones he likes. Take a look some pics we took of his sketchbook after the jump.  You may […]
