Eric has long been a man of transcendence, and this latest batch of work is certainly a representation of this. If you have the opportunity to attend the show in Copenhagen then we sternly suggest you make a night of […]

Art Focus: Shintaro Ohata

For our newest Art Focus feature, we will be introducing the work of Shintaro Ohata, currently represented by Yukari Art in Japan. As both a painter and sculptor, he combines his acrylic renderings with polystyrene based sculptures into one piece in novel ways. These every day scenes of people going about their business from the Japanese artist are accented by the three-dimensional elements that are painted to look like the “backdrop” piece itself. Take a look at more examples of the work below… Tipped off by Graffart.

Openings: David Shrigley – “Signs” @ Anton Kern Gallery

Enchanted as we were by David Shrigley’s retrospective last year in London (covered here & here), we were excited to see something new from him for his solo at that opened last week at the Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Entitled Signs, the paintings and sculptural works featured the UK-artist’s well-known witticisms and playful nature. The exhibition runs through February 19th so head over if you are in town. Discuss David Shrigley here.

Openings: Aakash Nihalani – “Portal” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Over the weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted all new work from Aakash Nihalani alongside the solo from Haroshi (covered). Nihalani’s innovative geometric forms, collectively entitled Portal, featured a playful nature throughout the compositions, yet at the same time exhibited a strong sense of structure. In the NY-based artist’s words – “I try to create a new visual space within the physical confines of any piece I work on, through the illusion of three-dimensional imagery contained on a two-dimensional plane. When looking at the work—orientation shifts, shapes merge, direction inverts, foreground […]

Tomorrow night (January 17th), the National Arts Club in New York will be opening their Nocturnes: Romancing the Night group exhibition. The genre “nocturne painting” is attributed to James Abbott McNeill Whistler who used the term to describe paintings that depicted night scenes or subjects blurred in a veil of twilight. Showing: Liu Bolin – “Hiding In The City” @ Galerie Paris-Beijing (Paris)

Currently showing the Paris branch of Galerie Paris-Beijing is Liu Bolin’s Hiding In The City featuring new examples of the Chinese artist’s signature technique of painting himself to blend in with the background. Last time we spent time with the “Invisible Man” was while he was in New York working on a complex collab (here & here) with French artist JR as well as unveiling a solo show at Eli Klein (covered) last year so it’s nice to see some new work.  You should too if you are in Paris before the show closes […]

Openings: Robert Lazzarini – “(damage)” @ Marlborough Gallery (Chelsea)

Do not adjust your browser – nothing is wrong with the settings. It’s visual distortion at its finest and this is what Robert Lazzarini intends. Last week, AM attended the opening of (damage) at Marlborough Gallery’s Chelsea location in New York to check out a series of works that takes Lazzarini’s mind-bending technique and incorporates the concept of “damage.” From a vault and its unhinged door to a broken window, Lazzarini demonstrates a warped perspective, but also its integrity and utility (or lack thereof). Our favorite is a […]
