ComplexCon ’16: First Look

This past weekend, our friends at Complex held their first ever “pop culture world fair” in Los Angeles and it was pretty spectacular. Studio Visit: Remi Rough

We stopped by the studio of Remi Rough while he prepared for his upcoming solo show entitled Post at the Speerstra Gallery in Switzerland. Since his first gallery exhibition in 1989, the British artist has successfully transitioned from his early graffiti style to create his own abstract geometrical language, recognisable regardless of its form, whether large scale murals or gallery works. Three months since its debut at the Seattle Art Fair (covered), the Juxtapoz x Superflat group show co-curated by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco and Takashi Murakami opened on the November 5th at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Staying on view until February 5th, the programming included a mixture of talks, lectures, tours, and special guests. World renowned artist, photographer and skateboarder (or the other way around), Ed Templeton, recently released a new book of photographs with Nazraeli Press. Memories of the Salt… takes us along on a 5-day family roadtrip from Pismo Beach to San Francisco via Santa Cruz, through black-and-white and color photographs. This release is the 95th book in the publisher’s One Picture Book series which aims to make original artwork affordable. On November 3rd, Lawrence Alkin Gallery opened Shoplifting, a new solo show by felt sculpture artist Lucy Sparrow. Inspired by the artist’s time spent working in a supermarket, the show will include a new range of daily products recreated as hand-crafted felt items. Publications: Barbara Kruger x New York Magazine Cover

For their election issue, New York Magazine turned to someone who they had worked with in the past, Barbara Kruger, to design the cover. Utilizing a variation of what is arguably her most iconic text-based work, the influential artist pasted a large red bar with the word “LOSER” across the face of Donald Trump. Recap: MOMO @ Studiocromie

Following a mural painting trip through Italy (more on this later), MOMO concluded things with a solo exhibition at Studiocromie in Grottaglie. The new body of work on includes paintings on canvas, paper pieces, prints, and ceramics all demonstrating the American artist’s unique use of patterns, shapes, and colors, both seemingly random and purposeful at the same time. The sold out show apparently was on view for two days only but you can see more photos below on what was on display. Discuss MOMO here.

With the inaugural ComplexCon fast approaching this weekend, the people behind POW!
