Basel Week Miami ’13 / Preview: Jeremy Geddes @ Jonathan LeVine (Pulse)

It’s that time of year again where our eyes turn towards the festivities coming up in Miami for Art Basel Week (see last year). First up is news from Australian artist Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) who we haven’t heard much from since his sold out solo show at Jonathan LeVine (covered) last year. He just introduced three new pieces he painted for the New York gallery’s booth at Pulse Miami – Ascent, Eoan and Labent – meticulously detailed hyper-realistic oil on board pieces. With these paintings, Geddes is further exploring and developing familiar imagery […]

In addition, a limited edition Octopus Tentacle Candlestick was made available for purchase. Take a look at all our photos below… Discuss this show here. Discuss Adam Wallacavage here.

Previews: SHAG – “Pink Elephants” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Later this month, November 23rd to be exact, the Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting a new solo show from SHAG (interviewed). The fresh paintings play on the phrase Pink Elephants, first coined by Jack London in 1913 to describe the hallucinations experienced from excessive alcohol consumption. He recently had to cut himself off as he found that it was interfering with his work ethic. So in it’s place, he has continued to expanded on the imagery of his characters enjoying their drink, part of the hip […]

Openings: Travis Louis – “Strange Discoveries” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Over the weekend, fans in Los Angeles were once again able to enjoy a new body of work from Travis Louie (interviewed) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. It’s been couple years since his last showing at the space (see 2011), but the paintings and drawings for Strange Discoveries were well worth the wait. Dedicated to his father who recently passed away, the exhibition featured Louie’s signature dignified portraiture of surreal creatures rendered amazingly to look like vintage photos. Take a look at more shots of the opening below… Photo […]

Dave Cooper x Johnny Ryan – “Pig Goat Banana Cricket” TV Series

The Canada-based Dave Cooper, who we last saw during a New York solo show, recently made the trip to Los Angeles to do more work on his recently green-lighted animated series with Nickelodeon. Pig Goat Banana Cricket was developed with Cooper in charge of art direction with Johnny Ryan writing for the children’s network, who have ordered 26 episodes to begin with. As you can see from the lush backgrounds and character design (better seen in pilot video below – note cricket exchanged for mantis), Cooper’s influence is definitely evident. […]

Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery. Take a look at more opening photos below… Discuss Masakatsu Sashie here.
