Studio Visits: Hisham Echafaki

AM recently had the chance to visit pop-surrealist painter Hisham Echafaki‘s studio. Using acrylic and oil paint, the London-based artist loves exploring symetry and patterns, as well as depicting animals in a surreal environment, as shown in his kufic and butterflies series. We were fortunate to document some of the painting process of his Anthropomorphic Bowie pieces as he prepared for the upcoming group show The Many Faces of David Bowie at the Opera Gallery London. Upcoming: Peter Chan – “Soliloquy” @ Copro Gallery

Next Saturday night (June 22nd), the Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting a new show from Peter Chan. For his first solo with the gallery and in the United States, the Toronto-based artist has created a series of works collectively entitled Soliloquy, a fitting title considering the introspective contemplations he had while producing these paintings (see statement below). Also take a look at the time-lapse video. Top 40 blares out the radio unheard, you’re stuck in traffic on the 405 but it doesn’t matter. […]

Art Focus: Robert Burden

Robert Burden’s artwork centers around his love for childhood toys, heroes, and icons & is the subject of our latest Art Focus feature. His nostalgic representations of these action figures from his past are set against backgrounds and patterns taken from fabric, rug, or wallpaper from his home while growing up. This elevation of these mass produced items with a reverence and almost talismanic obsession is an ironic metaphor for the consumer addiction seen today. The series of work seen here was included in his […]

The exhibition will feature works from his Proxy series, miniature dioramas and models invariably feature some natural disaster striking the quite life of suburbia. Discuss Thomas Doyle here.

Openings: “Otherworld” Group Show @ Roq la Rue

The title of the show was also the theme, with the artists interpreting “otherworld” however they saw fit. With a roster this good, one month just wouldn’t be enough, so the show will be on display until July 27th. Check out more photos of the work from artists Martin Wittfooth (above left), Chris Berens, John Brophy, Peter Ferguson, Sam Wolfe Connelly, Casey Curran, Madeline Von Foerster (above […]

Releases: AJ Fosik – “Shining Deathless” Print

Sculptor AJ Fosik (see our studio visit here) is known for his wood-bashing skills, but in a slight departure from his more recent medium of choice, he is due to release a limited print this week. Shining Deathless bridges the gap between his sculpture and the print medium by the use of relief on this embossed, hand finished print (see the hand-carved brass used in the process below). The print comes in at 13” x 18” paper size with deckle edge and is  signed and numbered in […]
