Preview: “Nocturnes: Romancing the Night” @ National Arts Club

Tomorrow night (January 17th), the National Arts Club in New York will be opening their Nocturnes: Romancing the Night group exhibition. The genre “nocturne painting” is attributed to James Abbott McNeill Whistler who used the term to describe paintings that depicted night scenes or subjects blurred in a veil of twilight. Upcoming: “Supernatural” @ Japanese American National Museum

Next month in Downtown LA’s Little Tokyo, the Japanese American National Museum will be hosting a group exhibition from three artists – Audrey Kawasaki, Edwin Ushiro, and Timothy Teruo Watters. Entitled Supernatural, the showing will give an opportunity for all three artists to explore otherworldly concepts, illustrating how traditional ideas have evolved and have been adapted over time. If this newest piece from Ushiro is any indication, this is one show you don’t want to miss (opening on February 9th). Discuss Edwin Ushiro here.

Openings: Nate Frizzell – “Spectrum” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

Just this Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in Culver City hosted the opening for Nate Frizzell (interviewed) and his newest solo show entitled Spectrum. The new paintings each featured the use of one pre-dominant color and his interpretations on the best imagery to fit that color, and when taken in total combine into one cohesive body of work. Openings: David MacDowell – “Project Mayhem” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Returning to the site of his last solo show (covered), Dave MacDowell (interviewed) presented a new body of work over the weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Entitled Project Mayhem, the exhibition certainly caused some damage that as MacDowell targeted anyone and everyone with his special form of caricatured satire – from religious, to political figures, and pop culture icons. The I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World group show opened at Roq La Rue this past Friday to a large crowd which simultaneously got to see some great art and escaped the freezing temperatures outside. Next Saturday night (January 19th), the third and final chapter of the Conjoined series of group exhibitions (see 2011 & 2012) will open its doors at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Tomorrow night (January 12th), the LeBasse Projects in Culver City will be presenting all new works from Nate Frizzell (interviewed). Spectrum will be his first solo showing of oil paintings since 2011 (covered) and as the title suggests, each painting will be focusing on a single color from his palette – in turn making up the full color range. Preview: Jay Howell – “Enthusiastic Person” @ FFDG (SF)

On February 1st, Jay Howell will be presenting all new works at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery (FFDG), his third solo with the SF showspace. Entitled Enthusiastic Person, the 25 mixed media cartoon-styled works on paper will featuring renderings of the case of characters from his new animated children’s show Sanjay and Craig set to premiere sometime this year on Nickelodeon. If you didnt’ know, the talented LA-based artist is also behind the design of the main characters on Fox’s hit show, Bob’s Burgers. Discuss this show here.
