Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Between Wind and Water” @ Thinkspace

Just this last Saturday, the Thinkspace Gallery presented a new show from Sarah Joncas (interviewed) entitled Between Wind and Water. The collection of new works included paintings as well as drawings featuring the Toronto-based artist’s female portraiture embellished with a surreal narrative. Upcoming: Martin Wittfooth @ Corey Helford

Coming up in September, the Corey Helford Gallery plans to lead off the fall season with an exhibition from Martin Wittfooth (interviewed). After witness a brilliant showing last October from the Brooklyn-based painter in New York where he unveiled increasingly powerful imagery in his work, we are looking forward to seeing what he has in store for LA. Art Focus: Eckart Hahn

For this week’s Art Focus, we take a look at the work of German painter Eckart Hahn. The self-taught and ever-evolving artist works in acrylics with his most recent series featuring portraiture of animals paired with synthetic materials. For those interested, today is the last day of his showing at Pablo’s Birthday Gallery in New York entitled Ancient Light. Via Beautiful / Decay.

Preview: Annie Owens – “Motherland” @ Copro Gallery

This Saturday night, the Copro Gallery will be hosting a new solo exhibition from Annie Owens, artist and co-founder of Hi-Fructose. Motherland includes watercolor works on paper as well as studies referencing Owen’s recent interest in her family tree with paintings of mysterious houses and characters. The exhibition runs through July 7th at the Bergamot Complex in Santa Monica.

Teaser: “Sur-Realism” @ Arcadia Gallery

In what looks to a be a impressive lineup, Arcadia Fine Arts in New York will be hosting a new group exhibition entitled Sur-Realism this weekend, with the opening on Saturday, June 16th. Although not 100% confirmed, artists scheduled to be submitting work include Martin Wittfooth, Billy Norrby, Brian Despain, Brad Kunkle, Eric White, Aron Wiesenfeld and more. As mentioned here earlier, Luke Chueh (interviewed) is having a series of autograph and sketching sessions celebrating the release of his new book – Bearing the Unbearable. Last weekend, we dropped by Gallery 1988 (Melrose) for the first and largest of these signings which also included a series of sketches on display from the LA-based artist. Basel Week Switzerland ’12: Haroshi for Jonathan LeVine Gallery (SCOPE)

Another booth to check out if you are lucky enough to be at Art Basel right now is the Jonathan LeVine setup at SCOPE. Japanese sculptor Haroshi has contributed three pairs of transparent shoes, fitted with feet sculpted from skateboards, a signature touch. Releases: Dan May – “The Resistless Hour Awaits” Print Set

Chicago-based painter Dan May (interviewed) recently put up a set of two prints for sale based on a commission piece he painted entitled The Resistless Hour Awaits. Featuring some of his signature imagery like his detailed rendering of strands, the limited editions are 16 x 20″ each, signed & numbered with COA, in a run of 50, and will cost you $100.  Head over to his webstore if you are interested. Teaser: Laurie Lipton – “L.A. Sous-Real” @ Ace Gallery (Los Angeles)

Coming up next month, Laurie Lipton (interviewed) will be opening her latest solo L.A. Sous-Real at the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles. Featuring her amazing skills with graphite and charcoal, the gifted artist will be putting on display a series of work featuring her signature surreal and hyper-detailed imagery, often executed with witty and biting commentary (LA is ripe for the taking don’t you think?).
