Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “The Study of Life as Things” @ Giant Robot 2

This Saturday, July 18th, at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be unveiling new works for his latest solo entitled The Study of Life as Things. Most of the drawings are 8.5″ x 11″ and done with graphite, ink and ballpoint pens, tools the locally-based artist used during his intermediate school days. Art Focus: Lisa Ericson

Painter Josh Keyes (interviewed) recently clued us in to the work of his wife Lisa Ericson by posting some of her work on various social media. We were especially drawn to a series she calls Mouserflies, for obvious reasons as you can see from the surreal hybrids seen here. For those interested in more from the Portland-based artist, you can see work from her as well as Keyes in the Unfathomable group show currently on view at The Piranha Shop, curated by Antler Gallery. Previews: Naoto Hattori – “Genesis” @ Copro Gallery

On July 18th, Naoto Hattori will be opening a new show at Copro Gallery in Los Angeles, the site of many previous exhibitions from the Japanese artist in the past. For this particular showing, the gifted painter has narrowed his focus to a series of surreal portraits rendered meticulously with amazing detail. This weekend, a show co-curated by Andrew and Shawn Hosner of Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery and Josef Zimmerman of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art will open at the museum. Entitled Invisible College, the group exhibition refers to the fact that many of the participants have found success outside of the traditional art educational model. Releases: Annie Owens x Pressure Printing – “Yee Naaldlooshi (Skinwalker)” Print

Our friends over at Pressure Printing have just released a new print from Annie Owens entitled Yee Naaldlooshi (Skinwalker). Produced in a run of 40 and based on a watercolor from Owens, the limited edition is sized at 18 ¼” × 14″ and costs $250. POW! WOW! Long Beach ’15: James Jean

Over the weekend, James Jean (interviewed) completed one of his tallest murals yet for POW! WOW! Long Beach (see our coverage here). Painted on the side of the historic Varden Hotel in the heart of downtown, the striking black and white mural was placed next to a wall by Tristan Eaton (more on this later). Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Blind Box” @ KP Projects // MKG

Just this last Saturday night, Masakatsu Sashie was at KP Projects / MKG presenting some new works in the project room, complementing Jeff Soto’s exhibition in the main space. Entitled Blind Box, the series of oil paintings and drawings centered on the Japanese artist’s striking spheres of manmade objects. The suspended orbs are beautifully rendered and are overlaid over urban environments speaking to ideas of globalism and universality.
