Mark Drew – “Deez Nuts” @ China Heights Gallery

Aussie artist Mark Drew, co-founder of the China Heights Gallery, recently held a solo exhibition at the Sydney showspace entitled Deez Nuts. The premise behind this new body of work (which started as a zine of the same name) was his genius decision to meld Peanuts comic imagery with classic rap lyrics combining some of his childhood obsessions. Rounding out the show was a reproduction Snoopy’s doghouse but modified with multiple Snoop Dogg references. Tipped off by My Modern Met. Photos via the artist. Discuss […]

Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Take a look at more detailed photos below… Via Designboom. Discuss Patricia Piccinini here.

Streets: JR (New York)

Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). On a related note, also check out the sweet gift he got from the twins here. Discuss JR here.

Openings: Mario Testino @ Prism

The Academy Awards were scheduled for Sunday, but on Saturday night, the stars came out to help celebrate Mario Testino’s opening reception for his exhibition at Prism in West Hollywood. Many of the photographer’s friends that are known for being immortalized in front of his camera came out in support of the legendary artist. They included Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Alessandra Ambrosio, Liberty Ross, Stephen Dorff, Irina Shayk, Jared Leto, Whitney Cummings, and many other beautiful women and men. On the walls were massive, bold, […]

Videos: Os Gemeos for MOCAtv

Last year in Boston, Os Gemeos painted a mural in conjunction with their showing at the Institute of Contemporary Art (covered). Now, MOCAtv has just released a video (seen below) documenting the progress along with some commentary from the twins as they talked about the entire project. Covered in the conversation with the two from São Paulo included their feelings about the piece being the first of its scale in Boston, musings on the meaning of art, and more… Photo credit: Maris. Preview: Melissa Haslam – “Floating Garden” @ LeBasse Projects

This Saturday night (March 2nd), the paintings we got a glimpse of during a studio visit with Melissa Haslam last month will be put on display at LeBasse Projects. Floating Garden will feature the Australian artist’s botanically-infused portraiture and stems from her fascination with scientific and entomological illustrations. Garden spaces overgrown with foliage and focused work on suspended flowers and plants comprise of some of the imagery that will be seen in this body of work. Discuss this show here. Streets: Shepard Fairey (New Mexico)

Shepard Fairey was recently invited to the Santa Fe University of Art and Design to do a lecture as part the school’s Artists for Positive Social Change series. Of course while there, Mr. Obey decided to create a mural for his fans in New Mexico. Considering the venue, Shep decided to get up with a pro-art, anti-war piece. See more detailed photos below… Photo Credit: StreetArtNews. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.
