Basel Week Miami ’12 / Art Focus: Jiro Takamatsu

During our stroll through the seemingly endless array of booths and artwork during Art Basel in Miami, we were stopped dead in our tracks by the solo from the late Jiro Takamatsu at McCaffrey Fine Art. The influential Japanese artist was known as a writer, sculptor, painter and printmaker with this showing focusing in on his famous shadow pieces. Although the booth was dominated by his large-scale portraiture, we were particularly drawn to his smaller works like the key shadows hanging from a hook as well as a dollhouse […]

José Parlá Commissioned by the Barclays Center

Brooklyn certainly seems to be getting their fair share of high-profile art projects recently. After Barry McGee’s large scale mural (covered here & here) in October at the Mark Morris Dance Group, the borough will will now see the work of José Parlá adorn the new home of the Brooklyn Nets – The Barclays Center. The 70-foot-long mural entitled A Diary of Brooklyn will be unveiled early next month in the Dean Street lobby and will be visible from the street. This won’t be Parlá’s first public […]

Streets: 0331c (Moscow)

We have one more piece from the streets to share with you before we close the chapter on this year’s Christmas festivities. It was -25°C in Moscow recently, but that didn’t stop 0331c and his friends from holding their own celebration of the holiday season with the creation of a graffiti Xmas tree on the side of a building. Check the video and more photos below… Photo Credit: Ekosystem.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Art Focus: Jorge Santos

As you saw from our coverage and cover image for CONTEXT Art Miami, we were quite taken by an artist new to AM – Jorge Santos. Showing with 101/Exhibit as well as Evan Lurie Gallery, the American painter takes inspiration from the political turmoil and struggles of his formative years in Angola and Portugal to create surreal and brooding scenes, a seemingly frozen snapshot in some fantastic story. With his works overflowing with intriguing characters and details, we found ourselves continually discovering new things as […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Brian Viveros – “War of the Roses” @ SCOPE / Thinkspace

After posting up the photos from Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo during this year’s SCOPE art fair in Miami, it’s now time to share the other artist featured in the Thinkspace booth – Brian Viveros. We caught an early glimpse at the new body of work, entitled War of the Roses, during a studio visit last month, and now fair-goers were able to enjoy what we had experienced – femme fatale portraiture with a Spanish twist and plenty costumed goodness. Take a look at the rest of the photos below… […]

Openings: “20 Pieces of Dreams” @ Giant Robot 2

A while back, before the current Post It 8 show (covered) that has taken over the walls of Giant Robot 2, a special show was put on at the gallery entitled 20 Pieces of Dreams. The group exhibition was curated by Mari Inukai and was meant to be in celebration of her daughter Sena’s 20th birthday, a coming of age event in Japanese culture. Included artists were many of Mari’s friends like Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki, Edwin Ushiro, Elizabeth Ito, Fumi Omori, Katsuya Terada, Kent Williams, Sean Chao, Stella Im Hultberg, Tessar […]

Merry Christmas from Escif

One of the most prolific street artists out there, Escif, apparently hasn’t taken Christmas off. He’s been on a roll as of late with increasingly more edgy and political imagery (for example here & here), not surprising as the depressing situation in Spain is fertile ground for inspiration. This recent wall in Valencia features his take on the Christmas tree. Discuss Escif here.
