Streets: Eric Haze x Standard Hotel (Los Angeles)

NY graf legend Eric Haze recently flew out to Los Angeles to participate in the MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, but being the busy bee he always is, he also took some time to put up some street work in the City of Angels. Working with the Standard Hotel he painted this great mural outside of the downtown location. Haze sent us these pictures of him creating this beast which measured 40 x 6 feet. This isn’t the first time he’s worked with the […]

Preview: Mars-1 – “Afterglow” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

If you are in New York this weekend, you don’t want to miss Afterglow, Mars-1’s (featured) latest body of work slated for a Thursday night opening at Jonathan LeVine. Staring at his detailed paintings always transports AM through his mind’s eye to strange alien civilizations and otherworldly landscapes.  We suggest you make time to do the same. A process video of Mars painting a work, as well as some further preview images after the jump.

Preview: Ryan McGinness – “Works on Paper” @ Country Club (LA)

Quickly following in the wake left by Recent Paintings (previewed), which opens this evening, the relentless stream of art events organized by Ryan McGinness for Los Angeles will continue without hesitation tomorrow night, this time spotlighting a series of works on paper. Hosted by Country Club LA, Works on Paper will see the screen-print guru present a collection of new and old pieces, collectively illustrating a subtler, more raw side to the production technique he has come to be renowned for. In conjunction with the […]

Preview: Kris Lewis @ David B. Smith Gallery

Tomorrow night in Denver, Kris Lewis (interviewed) returns to David B. Smith Gallery with a striking new body of work after a successful showing there in 2009.  The new collection of oil paintings feature his detailed renditions of mostly female characters all while focusing on capturing the emotional essence of each portrait. Also, as you will see, he continues to explore themes of the ocean and interplay of water in some of the works. More preview images after the jump…

Openings: Tracey Emin – ‘Love is What You Want’ @ Hayward Gallery

The major retrospective of work by Tracey Emin, Love is What You Want, is currently on at London’s Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre. AM attended the preview on Tuesday evening and was duly impressed. If you’re fond of Emin’s intensely personal, confessional and often provocative art, you’ll love this show. There’s certainly a great deal to take in, covering every phase of her career and the wide diversity of media she’s worked with: installation, embroidered and appliquéd blankets, neon, film, animation, photography, sculpture, painting, drawing […]

Outdoor/Streets: “Street a.k.a. Museum” @ Portsmouth Museum of Art – New Hampshire

In yet another example of street art and graffiti’s acceptance and proliferation in fine art institutions across America, the Portsmouth Museum of Art hosts Street a.k.a. Museum, curated by LeBasse Projects’ Beau LeBasse. The exhibition, which opened on May 11 and runs until Sept. 11 features familiar names: Bumblebee, Herakut (fresh off their beautification of Los Angeles), Shark Toof, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, and Andreas von Chrzanowski. The showing is the second part of a two part exhibition, the first of which was in LA featuring the […]

Previews: Cleon Peterson – “White Flag” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Cleon Peterson is getting ready to unleash a new series of brutal works at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition is entitled White Flag, which may mean surrender to you or I, but after checking out the graphic violence and gross depravity in these paintings, it may mean surrendering to the crazier side of human impulse. We stopped by the gallery to bring you a closer look at what you’ll be experiencing through his twisted landscapes. The show is officially on view already with a special […]

Opening tomorrow night, May 19th, the exhibition will mark the first solo effort by the New York contemporary heavy weight with the blue chip LA institution, presenting a brand new body of paintings to be complimented by a selection of classic works from a range of […]

Previews: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

New York-based Japanese artist Tat Ito makes his NYC solo debut with a show at the Joshua Liner Gallery entitled Memento Mori, the opening reception for which takes place 6-9pm this Thursday. The Latin phrase (literally “remember you will die”) often is used in reference to artwork representing death or the impermanent nature of life. However, from the look of the preview images we’ve seen, Ito seems to be using the term—along with certain visual allusions (like the lobster above) found within his new series […]

Preview: Andrew Schoultz – “Unrest” @ Morgan Lehman

Since stealing the show during Art Los Angeles Contemporary (covered) back in February, Andrew Schoultz will look to parlay his success on the West Coast back East with a new solo exhibition in New York. Opening Thursday, May 19th at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Unrest will yet again underscore Schoultz’s proficiency with his craft and his penchant for multiple mediums. Much like his last solo, Meltdown (covered), a massive sculptural installation will provide the anchoring eye candy within the gallery. The San Francisco-based artist’s fantastical narrative, […]
