Previews: KAWS @ Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)

There are only few days left before Brooklyn-based artist, KAWS opens his solo show at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia on October 11th. As previously mentioned the artist is working on the institution’s inaugural plinth sculpture, but also, these days he is busy installing his paintings in the galleries of the Historic Landmark Building. From the photos taken from KAWS’ Instagram, we can see that he has prepared a whole new series of his signature tondos in different sizes, but also, a new series of square canvases/panels. […]

After releasing a provocative video (seen directly below) for day #6 and a mobile waterfall truck for his day #5 of his Better Out Than In project in NYC, Banksy is continuing this event with a new street piece. As we mentioned last month, JR (interviewed) is returning to London after five years with a two-part solo exhibition, ACTIONS, at Lazarides Rathbone and multiple sites across the capital. The Inside / Out photobooth truck showed up last week and Londoners’ black and white portraits were pasted alongside the Somerset House. The 2013 British Ceramics Biennial which opened in Stoke-on-Trent on 28 September, celebrates the best in contemporary ceramics through a six-week programme of exhibitions, installations and events. One of the installations, Take Stock by Lawrence Epps, has been created from 12,000 ceramic office workers, which visitors to the biennial will be invited to take away with them. We’ve amassed quite the collection of books by London based graffiti dude / artist / muralist Remi Rough over time, and it looks like our shelves will be getting another addition pretty soon. #roughsketches is a 124 page book of blackbook drawings and sketches from 1996 to 2013, and it will be available in a limited edition of 100 numbered and signed copies, direct from Remi’s online store on Friday 11th October. Releases: Nick Walker x Royal Doulton

Nick Walker (interviewed) recently teamed up with English tableware and collectables producer Royal Doulton to produce a series of limited edition plates & mugs. The plates measure at 10.75”, and features iconic images from the street artist entitled New York, Love Vandal, Vandal Airways, as well as a collage. Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils spent some time this week chipping out his latest mural in the remote Tudela De Navarra, Spain for Avant Garde Urbano which began September 30th and closes October 27th. It is his fourth day of his street residency in New York, and for today the ever elusive Banksy created an ongoing series of works titled Random graffiti given a Broadway makeover. Known for simple, witty ideas, this concept is a perfect example of the street artist’s creative thinking. Fans of street art know the legend of French artist Blek Le Rat. The pioneer of stenciling has garnered praise from notable peers such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey. We recently stopped by Jonathan LeVine Gallery to catch Blek’s latest exhibition entitled Ignorance is Bliss. This large show took over all three spaces in LeVine’s gallery and featured canvased works and a golden sculpture of his interpretation of Michelangelo’s David. Discuss Blek Le Rat here.
