Preview: Thinkspace @ Affordable Art Fair

Tomorrow afternoon (January 19th) on the event deck at L.A. Live, the Affordable Art Fair will kick off their Los Angeles showing with a goal of presenting contemporary art priced from $100 – $10,000, hence their name. As part of our coverage of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris, you may have noticed some photos of a large abstract mural that the crowd was admiring. Apparently, Guillotine was on hand to document some live-painting action as the NY graffiti legend showed off his spray control. Discuss Futura here.

The ever-busy Phlegm has painted another whimsical mural depicting his fascination with flying devices, with this being a wearable version. Wingsuit, with excellent placement, is only one of a recent slate of walls the Sheffield-based street artist has worked on while taking a break from working on drawings for his new book. With only a couple more weeks to go before the opening for The Boneyard Project: Return Trip, artists are hard at work getting their plane parts painted – especially those who have whole planes to cover (DC Super 3 planes painted by How & Nosm, Nunca, and Retna, a C97 cockpit by Saner, a C45 plane by Faile, and a Lockheed VC 140 Jetstar by Andrew Schoultz). Well, hope everyone survived Friday the 13th. If so, you are will be able to enjoy this week’s roundup of work on the streets. Leading the charge is a series of new murals in an abandoned tower by Sheffield-based artist Phlegm. You can see the rest of them here. Streets: Escif & Blu (Buenos Aires)

While his compadre, Italian street artist Blu was painting up Buenos Aires (here, here, and here), it looks like Escif tagged along (you may also remember their back to back efforts together in Spain here) to work on some walls of his own. His contribution to the Argentinian city-scape is an entertaining step-by-step rendition of how to open a locked door with a credit-card. *Correction* this is a collaboration piece with Blu. Last night, AM was invited for a early viewing of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris. The exhibition entitled Expansions was a fresh collection of works created by the New York graffiti legend. Getting to see the paintings up close gave us a deeper appreciation of the details layered in by the Brooklyn-based artist.
