Streets: Tristan Eaton – “Monster Wall” @ Universal Studios (Los Angeles)

Over the course of a few weeks, Tristan Eaton recently finished painting a mural on backlot of Universal Studios featuring five of their iconic monsters. The 50-by-200-foot piece looks to be the LA-based artist’s best work yet and is a good example of the aesthetic his fans have grown to love including his signature patchwork style, attention to detail, and his use of references (he was able to explore Universal’s secret archive and view all of the original posters and ephemera from all of the monster movies). POW WOW ’19 / Streets: Shepard Fairey

Last month in Honolulu, Shepard Fairey (interviewed) created a mural for this year’s edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii. Attending the street art festival for the first time, the American artist decided to address global warming and preserving the environment for future generations with his new piece entitled Golden Future? Over the weekend in Taiwan, fans of KAWS experienced what their counterparts in Seoul felt (covered) when the American artist’s impressive HOLIDAY companion sculpture was revealed. Produced in a sitting position rather then laying down, the 36 meter tall inflatable figure relaxed itself at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei and will be on view through the 27th of this month. Making a statement during the holiday season in his own unique way, Banksy has created a new piece in South Wales. Featuring a boy enjoying what appear to be snowflakes while trying to catch some on his tongue, the mural turns dark when you look around the corner and realize it’s actually ash from a burning dumpster, not snow. Tomorrow (November 30th) is the public opening of Ethereal at Goldman Global Arts in Miami, Vhils’ (interviewed) latest solo show. Timed perfectly to coincide with this year’s Basel Week Miami, the debut solo exhibition for the gallery inside The Wynwood Walls will highlight the Portuguese artist’s unique mark-making as well as his skills with multiple techniques and mediums. Last month, Amy Sol (interviewed) had the opportunity to paint her first outdoor wall and her largest mural to date for this year’s POW! WOW! Antelope Valley. Curated by Thinkspace & Lancaster MOAH and created at the BLVD in downtown Lancaster, the piece features Sol’s signature female characters & creature companions created in a delicate muted palette. Last month, another POW! WOW! wrapped up in Rotterdam, their first event in Europe. POW! WOW! Rotterdam featured live music and a special exhibition in the HAKA building, but of course our focus is on the street art that was created at Keilewerf 1 and 2, an area that used to be an industrial part of the city. Streets: Okuda – “Air, Sea, Land” (Boston)

Earlier this month, Okuda completed his largest public installation project to date in Boston’s Seaport District. Curated by Justkids, the seven large-scale sculptures from the Spanish artist features his distinctive kaleidoscope of colors and geometric shapes. Air, Sea, Land is inspired by the intersection of elements at the dynamic waterfront neighborhood and continues exploring some of the street artist’s favorite themes – “the tale of life and coexistence, and the mythological edge where the animal kingdom encounters with the human world.” Discuss Okuda here.

Streets: Telmo Miel – “Prepared” (Italy)

Last month, Telmo Miel painted a mural entitled Prepared for the FestiWall public art festival in Italy. The touching image from the Dutch street artists features a woman putting a helmet on her armored son, symbolizing a mother’s love and the importance of family. Using their impressive spray paint skills, the duo from the Netherlands once again demonstrated their special blend of realism and abstraction with this multi-story wall in Ragusa. Recently in Oulu, Finland, Andrew Hem (interviewed) completed by far the hardest mural he’s ever painted due to the challenging texture of the wall. Created for multi-city UPEA street art festival, Crystal Blue from the American artist has a pixelated feel to it due to the tiny rocks on the surface of the wall. Using masterful gradients of of red and orange in the background, the stunning piece really stands out from the surroundings.
