Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. After covering a flurry of street murals for the POW WOW event in Hawaii, it’s time for a return to the Streets World Roundup for a look around the globe. POW WOW ’13: Streets Summary

After another enjoyable retreat in Hawaii for AM, it’s time to wrap up another successful POW WOW (see all our coverage here). Streets: Liqen (Ecuador)

Mexican artist Liqen recently headed south to spend some time on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast. Besides enjoying some good food, the street muralist did some birdwatching and sketching different species of these winged creatures. Inspired by the experience, he recently painted this wood building in Esmeraldas although some of the things he painted may be from his impressive imagination. Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). Shepard Fairey was recently invited to the Santa Fe University of Art and Design to do a lecture as part the school’s Artists for Positive Social Change series. Of course while there, Mr. Obey decided to create a mural for his fans in New Mexico. Considering the venue, Shep decided to get up with a pro-art, anti-war piece. POW WOW ’13: Kamea Hadar x Rone

Another mural created for POW WOW Hawaii by Kamea Hadar and Rone (see his first mural here) was finished up after the week ended. Combining the local talents of Hadar and Rone’s skills from down under, the mural featured a closeup portrait of a Hawaiian girl beautifying the Kaka’ako area for years to come. Streets: Blu (Rome)

We haven’t heard much from Italian street muralist Blu recently, but hopefully this new mural he just painted in Rome is a sign of things heating up for the prolific artist. The piece featuring interlocking cars was painted on the side of ALEXIS, an old building from the twenties which has been abandoned for years, but recently occupied by a group of intrepid students. It is named after Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed in 2008 by Greek police in Athens. Discuss Blu here.

Recently, street sculptor & photographer Slinkachu was asked to participate 20 Years of War Child, a new exhibition celebrating 20 years of the charity’s (War Child) work. He created three installations that he staged in various parts of London, the results of which will be put on display at The British Music Experience through March 28th. POW WOW ’13: DAL

Joining his wife and partner in art Faith47 in Hawaii for this year’s POW WOW was the South Africa-based DALeast. Only a few hundred feet away from where Faith painted her piece, DAL got up on the side of a building with this bird with an impressive wingspan, painted in his signature kinetic style.
