Streets: Okuda – “Air, Sea, Land” (Boston)

Earlier this month, Okuda completed his largest public installation project to date in Boston’s Seaport District. Curated by Justkids, the seven large-scale sculptures from the Spanish artist features his distinctive kaleidoscope of colors and geometric shapes. Air, Sea, Land is inspired by the intersection of elements at the dynamic waterfront neighborhood and continues exploring some of the street artist’s favorite themes – “the tale of life and coexistence, and the mythological edge where the animal kingdom encounters with the human world.” Discuss Okuda here.

On view through November 10th at Quint Gallery in La Jolla, Kelsey Brookes’ new show sees him take his work in a more dimensional direction. Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries continues the locally-based artist’s longstanding practice of looking to nature and science for inspiration. The painted freestanding and wall sculptures deal with viruses and the Fibonacci sequence, and feature Brookes’ signature psychedelic and colorful patterns. Material Memory, a solo show from Jonathan Chapline opened last week at The Hole in New York City. Set against an eye-catching floor-to-ceiling gridded out gallery space, the Brooklyn-based artist’s digital aesthetics are perfectly accentuated by the Tron-like backdrop. Although he works with traditional subject matter like domestic interiors, still lifes, bathers, it is Chapline’s use 3D programs to render artworks followed by hand painting with acrylic and flashe on panel that make them unique, along with his masterful use of color gradients and lighting. Coinciding with Frieze Week in London, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac will be hosting a 24h live performance (starting October 5th at 6 pm), Swiss Passport Office, by American artist Tom Sachs. On Saturday night (October 6), Spoke Art in San Francisco will be opening a solo show from Amy Sol (interviewed). Lore sees the locally-based artist continue her more recent use of a darker and smokier palette for paintings as well as her forays into sculpture. Sol’s elegant renderings of her female characters and their animal companions seem to have taken on a more meditative tone, frozen moments of time seemingly giving glimpses of some delicate ritual. Last weekend, the Marciano Art Foundation opened an new expansive show from Ai Weiwei, his first major institutional exhibition in Los Angeles. Entitled Life Cycle, the showing includes old and new pieces, as well as a reworking of older concepts and techniques from the Chinese artist.
