Previews: Friends With You – “Happy Rainbow” @ TMTP Cultural Center

Miami artist collective FriendsWithYou will have their next exhibition open overseas in Hong Kong this coming Saturday (July 22nd). Happy Rainbow will be their first solo show in Chinese territory and will premier at the TMTP Cultural Center. Much like their interactive Rainbow City shows in NYC and Miami, FWY will bring large scale inflatable bouncing installations as well as fiberglass, plush and resin sculptures to envelope visitors with their signature happy vibes. The second half of the Joshua Liner curated Go West exhibition featured work from versatile artist David Ellis, which took up half of Los Angeles’ Mark Moore Gallery (see Kris Kuksi’s part in the show here). Those attending the opening in Culver City on Saturday night would have seen the NY-based artist’s paintings featuring his sinuous motif (also seen in a recent large-scale mural), a sound sculpture, as well as his co-opted vinyl record pieces. Just this past Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles hosted Go West, a joint show between Kris Kuksi and David Ellis curated by Joshua Liner that is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York last May where the two galleries roles were flip-flopped. For his part, Kuksi brought along several of the large mixed media assemblages that he is famous for. Continuing the collaboration between two galleries on opposite coasts, this Saturday night (July 14th) sees the opening of Go West at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibition, which will be curated by Joshua Liner Gallery, is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York showspace last May which was curated by Mark Moore. Preview: Jeremy Fish – “Where Hearts Get Left” @ Fifty24SF

This Saturday, July 14th sees the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) solo show at Fifty24SF. Entitled Where Hearts Get Left, the new body of work to be presented is a testament to the the Bay Area-based artist’s love for San Francisco. As such, the imagery presented is thematically tied into local references including Native American legends, food spots, tourist attractions, historical details, and more all rendered beautifully in his signature style including his use of sculptural motifs. Openings: Colin Christian – “Hello, Pretty Pretty” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, alongside new work from RISK, the talented Colin Christian (interviewed) put a selection of his sculptural creations on display at the Corey Helford Gallery. Much like his showing in Texas earlier in the year (covered), the new body of work collectively entitled Hello, Pretty Pretty featured a mix of free standing figures and wall mounted faces, all produced in Christian’s signature cyber-erotic aesthetic. For our newest Art Focus feature, we turn our attention to the sculptures of Korean artist Hyungkoo Lee. His Homo Animatus series of works feature skeletal representations of familiar cartoon characters created out of resin, aluminum sticks, stainless steel wires, springs, and oil paint. Last week, the Black Rat Projects opened a show curated by Corey Helford Gallery entitled Letters From America. The group exhibition included American artists SABER, RISK, Ron English, and TrustoCorp taking advantage of the July 4th holiday (US Independence Day) to introduce London art lovers to work from across the pond that they may not have seen in person before. One of the featured artists at Art Hong Kong this year was Yayoi Kusama. Her revolutionary style of dots and environmental immersion has received distinction from both Western and Asian art institutions. Even fashion icon Louis Vuitton has recently honored her creativity with a collaborative project that kicks off this season.
