Openings: Isaac Cordal @ RAS Gallery

Last Friday, RAS Gallery in Barcelona hosted the opening of Isaac Cordal’s latest collection of works which were presented by SUBEN and curated by Maximiliano Ruiz. Cordal’s outdoor sculptural interventions, which often times are political in nature, made the transition to the gallery setting with pieces arrayed on a series of shelves and with floor installations. At most of the art fairs that we attend, inevitably one of the eye-catching sculptures will be from Ron Mueck. His hyperrealistic works are often eerie in their detail, but not only that, the pieces are taken up a notch by being produced in large scale. Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) will be opening up a solo Thousand Regards this week at the Katzen Arts Center of the American University Museum. Co-sponsored by the Japan Embassy and the Japan Foundation, this impressive exhibition is part retrospective and part new imagery. Last Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in the heart of LA’s Chinatown hosted a new solo show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Jokes On Me… was a sculptural extravaganza with some of Yoskay’s favorite toys customized (utilizing plaster, resin, vinyl, clay and wood) with his signature facial expressions and other modifications. The French sculptor creates these ornate porcelain pieces that would be classic works except that he literally “throws a wrench in things” by having various items like baseball bats, axes, knives, nails and more embedded in them. Coming up this Saturday night (March 24th), the LeBasse Projects in Chinatown will be presenting a collection sculptural works from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) that he has been working for the last several years. The showing, entitled Jokes On Me…, features customized figures of iconic toys from childhood as well his own creations putting his skills with a range of mediums including plaster, resin, vinyl, clay and wood.
