Openings: Isaac Cordal @ RAS Gallery

Last Friday, RAS Gallery in Barcelona hosted the opening of Isaac Cordal’s latest collection of works which were presented by SUBEN and curated by Maximiliano Ruiz. Cordal’s outdoor sculptural interventions, which often times are political in nature, made the transition to the gallery setting with pieces arrayed on a series of shelves and with floor installations. Also on display were some photos of his street works featuring his cement characters in various locations he has visited. You can seen all the work here, but also […]

Preview: Ron Mueck @ Hauser & Wirth (Savile Row, South Gallery)

At most of the art fairs that we attend, inevitably one of the eye-catching sculptures will be from Ron Mueck. His hyperrealistic works are often eerie in their detail, but not only that, the pieces are taken up a notch by being produced in large scale. Tonight, those in London can witness four of these works from the Australian sculptor themselves at Hauser & Wirth (Savile Row, South Gallery) including Still Life (2009), Drift (2009), Youth (2009) and Woman with sticks (2008). Take a look at more preview […]

Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Jokes On Me…” @ LeBasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in the heart of LA’s Chinatown hosted a new solo show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Jokes On Me… was a sculptural extravaganza with some of Yoskay’s favorite toys customized (utilizing plaster, resin, vinyl, clay and wood) with his signature facial expressions and other modifications. He was also more than happy to share humorous anecdotes associated with many of the pieces. Perhaps the most impressive piece of the show was the large-scale installation piece he placed on the back wall […]

For those in Toronto, Tessar Lo’s solo show titled Past, Present, Past-Present will be opening this Friday, March 30th at the Cooper Cole Gallery. For his home city, the thoughtful painter has assembled a collection of works that continues to build off what we saw from him during his last show (covered) at the renamed showspace. Art Focus: Laurent Craste

For this weekend’s Art Focus feature, we wanted to point you to the work of Laurent Craste. The French sculptor creates these ornate porcelain pieces that would be classic works except that he literally “throws a wrench in things” by having various items like baseball bats, axes, knives, nails and more embedded in them. By utilizing the typical decorative item as an indicator for social status, instruments of political power, and demonstrations of ostentatious luxury, the Montreal-based artist is able to make a statement with […]

Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Triumph” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening for Kris Kuksi’s latest body of work entitled Triumph. The solo exhibition held at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery was his most impressive yet. Focusing on going big, Kris brought the heavy artillery as several mammoth works became the centerpieces of the night. Working on a scale that we were not accustomed to seeing, Mr. Kuski did two things that usually don’t go hand in hand – he increased the size while maintaining his meticulous standard and detailing […]
