Previews: “Suggestivism” @ Copro Gallery

Last week during the frenzy of Lollapalooza in Chicago, Shepard Fairey curated a group exhibition with a strong lineup of artists that many of you are familiar with. Previews: Mark Whalen – “Peculiarities” @ Melbourne Art Fair

On August 13th, blackartprojects will be showing new work from Mark Whalen (aka Kill Pixie) at the Melbourne Art Fair. Peculiarities will see the Australian born, Los Angeles based artist continue his explorations of isolated geometric environments where his strange characters dance, contort, and interact in unusual ways, often beautiful and grotesque at the same time. Streets: Eine for Project M/5 (Berlin)

Urban Nation in Berlin are continuing their series of workshops, events and exhibitions with Project M/5, this time curated by Roland Henry and VNA Magazine (also see M/4, M/3) For the next part of this summer long event, Henry and his team of knowledgeable street/urban art lovers put together an interesting and diverse lineup of participating artists. Openings: Tara McPherson – “Supernova” @ Merry Karnowsky

Last weekend, the opening of Supernova at Merry Karnowsky Gallery by Tara McPherson reminded her fans in Los Angeles of some of the reasons they love her work. Working in warm blues and reds, her female characters are rendered flatly with crisp lines, yet with an urgent vibrancy as the New York-based artist and gallery owner plays with familiar heart and water motifs. Streets: Herbert Baglione for Djerbahood (Tunisia)

Another artist that was invited to Djerba in Tunisia for the Djerbahood Project organized by Galerie Itinerrance was Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione. The streets of the picturesque village of Erriadh felt like a perfect setting for his ongoing 1000 Shadows project, so the artist painted several new pieces around the town. Like many other artists participating in the project, Baglione involved existing architectural elements into his work, but he pushed that concept even further. Tonight, in the middle of a hot NYC summer, Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be opening a group exhibition entitled Cruel Summer. Curated by collector, graffiti historian and urban anthropologist Roger Gastman, the exhibition is inspired by the summer of 1984 and the song Cruel Summer by Bananarama. Dutch artist and illustrator Femke Hiemstra (featured) returns to Roq La Rue Gallery for a shared solo alongside Casey Weldon (featured) on Thursday, August 7th. Working with an expanded palette and new provocative imagery, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) gave her fans what they wanted and more with her new solo show. Entitled Hirari Hirari, the sold out exhibition held at Merry Karnowsky Gallery, took the locally-based painter’s portraiture up a notch with her flawless feminine forms.
