Preview: Gregory Euclide @ Martha Otero Gallery

Opening this Saturday (April 13th) in West Hollywood is Gregory Euclide’s first solo exhibition with his West Coast gallery Martha Otero. The artist will present fresh work consisting of landscape relief paintings along with a series of porcelain-coated steel specimens painted with Japanese sumi ink. On May 7th, the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery will be opening up The Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba, a collaborative showing between JR and José Parlá. Featuring twelve large portraits and a site specific installation, the exhibition will showcase works that were put up by the two friends during their time in Cuba (covered) for JR’s continuing project of photographing senior citizens and pasting their portraits on the walls of city buildings. On this Friday (April 12th), Roq La Rue in Seattle will be welcoming back Travis Louie (interviewed) for a solo showing entitled Monsters On Their Day Off. Well known for his compelling portraiture featuring fantastical creatures posed in formal attire, the paintings stretch the mind with their obviously imaginative imagery combined with a technique that make one think you are looking at vintage photographs. French street artist and photographer JR is in Berlin this week, working on a new project that will span over 15 different buildings within the city limits. In conjunction with his Wrinkles of the City project, his new work will include portraits of elderly individuals who have, over time, witnessed and experienced the upheaval and transformation of the city of Berlin. Preview: Ray Caesar @ CHG Circa

This Saturday night (April 13th), Ray Caesar (interviewed) will be unveiling imaginative new works mixed in with images from the past at CHG Circa in Culver City. His surreal and oftentimes disturbing digital works are painstakingly created in three-dimsional modeling programs and then staged in detailed environments. These are then released as limited editions in a chosen orientation and because of the freedoms afforded by this process, his three new pieces also have accompanying smaller cropped versions. Showing: Tauba Auerbach – “Tetrachromat” @ WIELS

Last month, Tauba Auerbach’s traveling exhibition Tetrachromat reached its stop in Belgium at Wiels Contemporary Art Center. Fans of the New York-based artist’s exquisite work in other parts of Europe like Bergern Kunsthall in Norway in 2011 (covered) and to Malmö Konsthall in Sweden in 2012 already had their chance to witness it in person – now it’s Brussels’ chance.
