AM was fortunate enough to be able to trek down recently to Washington D.C. and catch Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) solo exhibition at the Katzen Arts Center at the American University Museum. Aptly titled Thousand Regards, Matsu presented a balanced mix of works that varied from sculptures, paintings to installations to greet the guests visiting the museum. Openings: ROA – “Hypnagogia” @ StolenSpace (Part I)

Last week, the StolenSpace Gallery in London hosted a solo exhibition from the Belgium-based ROA at two different locations – their usual space in the Truman Brewery and at The Stone Masons, 17 Osborne Street London E1 6TD. Openings: Greg Simkins – “Cloud Theory” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, fans of Greg Simkins (Craola) (featured) were treated to a showing of his first major body of work since his exhibition last year in Canada (covered). Presenting a collection of paintings at Merry Karnowsky that were complex, imaginative, and beautifully rendered, the LA-based artist made sure Cloud Theory was well worth the wait. Openings: Herakut – “Loving the Exiled” @ 941 Geary

Saturday evening, 941 Geary hosted German duo Herakut’s latest exhibition – Loving the Exiled (previewed). The show consists of a series of large scale works on canvas that depict figures that have fallen from grace. Although the show does not include an installation (which is typical of their shows), they were able to do a piece in the entrance of the gallery, as well as down the street on the side of Hemlock Tavern. Previews: BAM Benefit Auction @ Paddle 8

AM recently had the chance to stop by The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) annual silent auction to take a look at the artwork up for bid. This being their 150th anniversary, BAM got a gaggle of great artwork donated by some impressive artists working in the greater New York area such as Nate Lowman, Carmen Herrera, Tauba Auerbach, KAWS, Ryan McGinness, Jacob Kassay, Terrance Koh and many more. Openings: Dennis McNett x Swoon x Monica Canilao @ Galleria Patricia Armocida

Earlier this month Dennis McNett (featured), Swoon (interviewed) and Monica Canilao opened a brand new exhibition entitled The Folding of a Known World at Galleria Patricia Armocida. The trio of US-based artists traveled to Milan to work together on creating fresh collaborative installations filled with their signature styles and techniques. McNett sent us some photos documenting their progress as they slaved away in Italy as well as some final shots of the fruits of their labor. Check it all out after the jump.

Preview: “Cigarettes, Phone Cards & Hip Hop Clothing” @ FFDG

Next Friday, April 20th, Fecal Face Dot Gallery will be presenting a new group exhibition entitled Cigarettes, Phone Cards & Hip Hop Clothing. Featuring a list of artists as diverse as the title, San Francisco art-lovers will be treated to work from Tom Betthauser, Kelsey Brookes, Ryan Travis Christian, Scott Greenwalt, Robert Hardgrave, Hiro Kurata, Mildred, Pacolli, Marco Zamora, and Alex Ziv. Preview: Invader – “Derives” @ Alice Gallery

Back in March, we shared photos with you of some new Invader work in Brussels including some pieces with references to the famous peeing statue that is a symbol for the city. It looks like Belgium will also be getting a solo show from the Parisian artist at Alice Gallery with the opening scheduled for tonight. Openings: Isaac Cordal @ RAS Gallery

Last Friday, RAS Gallery in Barcelona hosted the opening of Isaac Cordal’s latest collection of works which were presented by SUBEN and curated by Maximiliano Ruiz. Cordal’s outdoor sculptural interventions, which often times are political in nature, made the transition to the gallery setting with pieces arrayed on a series of shelves and with floor installations. Streets: Olek – Katowice Street Art Festival (Poland)

The last we saw of the Polish-born Olek, she was filling a gallery in New York (covered) with an immersive installation utilizing balloons. It looks like she has decided to return to using her signature yarn for her part in the Katowice Street Art Festival (April 20 – 29) in her hometown which will also feature work from Mark Jenkins, Mentalgassi, Tellas, ROA, Hyuro, Moneyless, Escif, M-City and others.
