Releases: David Flores – “Deathead”

Not only has David Flores been busy in the streets and in the gallery, he has also been working on a new figure entitled Deathead. The 10″ tall reinterpretation of Mickey melded with Totenkopf symbol utilized by the Prussian army during the time of Frederick the Great will be produced by Bic Plastics and reportedly come in five colorways. On February 24th, the always provocative Terry Richardson’s will be opening his first solo showing in Los Angeles at the OHWOW Gallery. The busy fashion and celebrity photographer had only recently exhibited in New York at the end of last year with work focused on his mom and dad (covered). This time around, the new snapshots are entitled semi-eponymously TERRYWOOD and is no doubt inspired by multiple facets of Hollywood life. Discuss Terry Richardson here.

Opening recently alongside Stephan Doitschinoff at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was Baltimore-based artist Sam Gibbons. In his first solo exhibition with the gallery, the artist unveiled his latest show Directed by Kilroy, a series of paintings on custom cut wood panels shaped in the silhouette of his subjects. Utilizing bold colors along with exaggerated & elastic forms, he explores the themes of morality and carnal desire. Preview: Hush @ 941 Geary

Just weeks after unveiling an installation at Onethirty3 (covered), the UK based Hush (interviewed) is currently working on his next exhibition scheduled to open on Saturday, January 21st. Returning to San Francisco after a showing back in 2010 (covered), the indoor-outdoor specialist will be presenting his gritty Asian-inspired creations at 941 Geary. We recently got wind of a new print release from Mars-1 when we spied this photo of the process last week. The limited editions were created for the recent Ween New Year’s Eve concert in Denver and came in several variants and are based on an imagery of his more minimalistic work, most recently seen in his show in San Francisco (covered). It’s been a while since we caught up with Stephan Doitschinoff (aka Calma). The Brazilian artist last showed with Jonathan Levine Gallery back in 2008 (covered) but now is back with a new series entitled Novo Asceticismo, which hits religious themes via mixed-media works rich in symbolism and highlighted by Latin text. Doitschinoff reflects on the sacrifice and deprivation necessary for the modern man to continue and live purely despite a society filled with vices and common mental traps. As we previously mentioned, Esao Andrews will be opening a show this Saturday night, January 7th, at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Nowhere will include imagery familiar to his fans like creepy houses, distorted balloons, and ghostly ships all painted with his surreal touch and moody palette. AM recently stopped by the agnès b. gallery boutique to catch their latest exhibition with esteemed Italian photographer Massimo Vitali. The opening reception allowed guests to peruse a new series of photographs taken in Italy, Turkey and Greece from 2009-2011. Making use of his signature style, Massimo took the photos from a high vantage point (4-5 meters) using large format film cameras to achieve his unique look at beach and tourist landscapes.
