Previews: Max Snow – “Lock, Stock and Teardrops” @ DUVE Berlin

Opening tomorrow, October 29th, Max Snow will present a new body of work revolving around the theme of pain at DUVE Berlin in Germany. In a two-person exhibition alongside Ali Kepenek, Lock, Stock and Teardops focuses on portraits of individuals laden with scars, both literal and figurative. The New York-based artist’s signature black-and-white photographs, intimate and melancholic, are at times as uncomfortable as they are sublime. The exhibition runs through Saturday, December 10th. Check out a preview of some of the work after the jump.

Releases: “Ai Weiwei: New York 1983 – 1993” Book

Released in conjunction with Ai Weiwei’s photographic exhibition, currently running from October 15th 2011 to March 18th 2012 at Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, Ai Weiwei: New York 1983-1993 chronicles the ten year period spent by the then unknown Chinese immigrant living in a tiny apartment in the East Village. Capturing the essence of New York through the lens of a youth enjoying freedom for the first time, more than 10,000 photos emerged during this period. Personally curated by Ai himself, the 220 photos selected offer an […]

Openings: Osgemeos – “Fermata” @ Museu Vale (Brazil)

Words cannot begin to describe the wonderment and joy one feels when confronted by these photos of the new Osgemeos exhibition at the Museu Vale in Brazil. It seems the twins always seem to save their best for the museums in their home country (see Vertigo and Vertigem), as well they should. From the complex sculptural builds featuring intricate inclusions of various art items and paraphernalia, to the grand expansion of the well received multi-colored stripes seen in some of their recent work, to their […]

Jasper Wong – “Little Shop of Wonder” @ Loft In Space

Loft In Space, the site of this year’s (covered) and next year’s POW WOW, was recently converted into a giant coloring book by gallery director Jasper Wong. The very busy and versatile designer, artist, illustrator, and curator is also one of the co-owners of Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong, site of an Arrested Motion group show at the end of next month. For this project, entitled Little Shop of Wonder, the 60 feet of wall space took two days of hard work for Jasper to […]

Preview: Evan Hecox – “BOROUGH and LANE” @ StolenSpace

Last time we caught up with Evan Hecox, it was back in 2009 at his New York solo. On November 3rd, it will be our friends across the pond who will have the opportunity to check a new body of work from the San Francisco-based artist. BOROUGH and LANE will be hosted by StolenSpace and feature a collection of works inspired by the city of London, focusing on parts of the former industrial and working-class areas like east to Shoreditch and Hoxton, to the side-streets […]

Preview: “13th Hour” @ Last Rites

Halloween is just around the corner, and with it there is sure to be much art-related news. We’ll start things off with the annual 13th Hour group exhibition at Last Rites Gallery. Their roster of artists are well suited to use holiday as their muse because the New York gallery supports purveyors of dark surrealism with shows all year round. This 4th rendition of the show opens on October 28th and will feature a lineup of Shawn Barber, Nick Baxter, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, […]

Openings: Ryan McLennan – “Abominations” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Opening last week alongside Chloe Early at Joshua Liner Gallery was Brooklyn-based painter Ryan McLennan. With his new body of work, Abominations (previewed), McLennan takes a look at the animal kingdom through his unique eyes and creates instances that often reflect and draw parallels to human situations. We liked the raw emotions coming out of his animal friends and the also the interesting use of black backgrounds as opposed to the white that we are used to seeing from him. This show runs until November 19th […]

Preview: Kelsey Brookes – “Desires of the Soul” @ The Outsiders

It’s been almost a year since Kelsey Brookes (featured) had a solo show, and if you remember, it was held at Circleculture in Berlin. The time since then has been spent in the studio getting together a new body of work (30 new paintings, 13 sculptures, drawings, and more) ready for Desires of the Soul, his newest exhibition set to open on November 3rd at The Outsiders in London. A show six years in the making, it certainly sounds like something you should attend. More […]

Openings: David Jien – “The Plight of the Who” @ Richard Heller Gallery

We are a little late on these photos, but last month, we stopped by the Richard Heller Gallery in West LA to catch the opening of David Jien’s solo exhibition. Entitled The Plight of the Who, the new body of work really put the LA-based artist’s attention to detail and imaginative epic landscapes on display. His fantasy and science fiction tinged narratives, some of it risque, invited attendees to immerse themselves in his world and wonder what stories Jien was trying to get across. Make […]

Openings: Chloe Early – “Feathers and Wax” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, AM attended the opening for Chloe Early’s first New York solo exhibition. Feathers and Wax was held at a packed Joshua Liner Gallery and as previewed, this latest series of paintings impressed fans in attendance with a unique mix of dreamy colors & serene figures contrasted by some harsh and aggressive objects such as bullets & bombs. We were also impressed by the diverse mediums Chloe choose to paint on such as metal and linen. This great show is up until November 19th, so […]
