Openings: David Shrigley – “Signs” @ Anton Kern Gallery

Enchanted as we were by David Shrigley’s retrospective last year in London (covered here & here), we were excited to see something new from him for his solo at that opened last week at the Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Entitled Signs, the paintings and sculptural works featured the UK-artist’s well-known witticisms and playful nature. The exhibition runs through February 19th so head over if you are in town. Openings: Aakash Nihalani – “Portal” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Over the weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted all new work from Aakash Nihalani alongside the solo from Haroshi (covered). Nihalani’s innovative geometric forms, collectively entitled Portal, featured a playful nature throughout the compositions, yet at the same time exhibited a strong sense of structure. It looks like another company has tapped the art world for a collaborative line of products with the announcement of new joint venture from Coach and Craig Costello. The Brooklyn-based artist, otherwise known as KRINK (who we last saw activity from in LA, Miami, and Hawaii), will be part of the Spring/Summer collection with a series of bags, wallets, and accessories – all featuring his signature drip aesthetic. Newly formed art collective devNgosha recently stopped by the offices of theAudience and painted a new mural entitled Connected. Situated in the same building that houses work from JR (covered) and Kozyndan (covered), this new multi-wall project combines the talents of Devin Liston and Gosha Levochkin. Tomorrow night (January 17th), the National Arts Club in New York will be opening their Nocturnes: Romancing the Night group exhibition. The genre “nocturne painting” is attributed to James Abbott McNeill Whistler who used the term to describe paintings that depicted night scenes or subjects blurred in a veil of twilight. Upcoming: “Supernatural” @ Japanese American National Museum

Next month in Downtown LA’s Little Tokyo, the Japanese American National Museum will be hosting a group exhibition from three artists – Audrey Kawasaki, Edwin Ushiro, and Timothy Teruo Watters. Entitled Supernatural, the showing will give an opportunity for all three artists to explore otherworldly concepts, illustrating how traditional ideas have evolved and have been adapted over time. If this newest piece from Ushiro is any indication, this is one show you don’t want to miss (opening on February 9th). Discuss Edwin Ushiro here.

Streets: Roa & Ever (Buenos Aires)

The anatomical dissections of local animals and Chinese propaganda, two types of imagery that you wouldn’t think would work as a collaboration. However, that is exactly what happened when ROA and Ever joined forces in Argentina for a joint mural entitled The people feed communism to the beast. This piece, painted over the Christmas holiday, was placed on a squatted building in Palermo Viejo in Buenos Aires and features Mao head offered up to an elephant seal. Photo credit: Graffitimundo. Currently showing the Paris branch of Galerie Paris-Beijing is Liu Bolin’s Hiding In The City featuring new examples of the Chinese artist’s signature technique of painting himself to blend in with the background. Last time we spent time with the “Invisible Man” was while he was in New York working on a complex collab (here & here) with French artist JR as well as unveiling a solo show at Eli Klein (covered) last year so it’s nice to see some new work. Openings: Nate Frizzell – “Spectrum” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

Just this Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in Culver City hosted the opening for Nate Frizzell (interviewed) and his newest solo show entitled Spectrum. The new paintings each featured the use of one pre-dominant color and his interpretations on the best imagery to fit that color, and when taken in total combine into one cohesive body of work.
