Preview: Femke Hiemstra – “Let The Devil Wear Black” @ Roq La Rue

On Friday night, the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle will be presenting all new works from Femke Hiemstra (showing alongside Ryan Heshka). Let The Devil Wear Back will feature the Dutch artist’s mixed media paintings as well as black & white drawings that chronicle the stories of mysterious animals (like cats!) as well as come-to-life inanimate objects. These dark fairytale scenes are often rendered on found objects like books and boxes, further enhances each piece’s whimsy and “magical powers.” Discuss this show here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Openings: “Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates” @ Wynwood Walls

Earlier this evening, AM stopped by Wynwood Walls to check out the opening of the Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates group exhibition inside the new Nicewalk Gallery space. The show featured backlit lenticular paintings (or photos) alongside some original works from selected artists (Aiko, Ron English, Swoon, How & Nosm, Logan Hicks, Kenny Scharf, Futura) who have painted murals at the complex. Previews: Lucas Price – ‘T.E.A.M. Atlas’ @ Rove Gallery

Expect more pleasant surprises from Lucas Price as his latest body of work is about to be revealed in solo show T.E.A.M. Streets: Escif (Spain)

Sparked by the recent pardoning of policemen convicted of beating an innocent man in Spain, Escif as painted a new mural in Valencia entitled Swan Lake. Taking inspiration from a recent video of the incident captured on tape (seen below) and set to the music of Swan Lake, the Spanish street artist has taken the liberty to add tutus to the officers in action. Upcoming: Jeff Koons @ Gagosian Gallery (Beverly Hills)

Returning to the Gagosian space in Beverly Hills where he last exhibited in 2009 (covered), Jeff Koons will be opening a new exhibition there on December 7th. Although he is know mostly for his larger than life sculptures, the last time he showed at the gallery, he brought with him bold new paintings. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Preview: Scott Scheidly @ SCOPE / Spoke Art

Like the ArtPadSF in San Francisco earlier this year (covered), Scott Scheidly will be showing more works from his series of unusual portraits – this time at the SCOPE art fair in Miami (part of Basel Week Miami). The Orlando-based Schneidly will be one of the featured artists at the Spoke Art booth (along with Jessica Hess), so head over if you are in town to check out his tyrants, dictators, and other pop culture icons re-imagined in a different context. Openings: Takashi Murakami – “Flowers & Skulls” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Last week, the Gagosian in Hong Kong presented a selection of works from Takashi Murakami entitled Flowers & Skulls, common reoccurring themes in the Japanese superstar’s imagery. The spacious showspace was a perfect backdrop for various paintings from his repertoire including his flower balls, stacked skulls, self-portraits and more.  Stop by before it closes on February 9th if you want to see the work up close and personal.
