Upcoming: Andreas Englund – “Superlife Uncut” @ Distinction Gallery

On July 8th, Distinction Gallery in Escondido, California will be opening a solo show by Andreas England entitled Superlife Uncut. On view will be the Swedish artist’s signature humerous portraiture of an aging superhero and the details of his everyday mundane life. Previews: Andreas Englund @ Ramhuset

After completing a clever two wall mural in Berlin, Andreas England is getting ready to open a solo show on June 17th at Ramhuset in his hometown. The Swedish artist has prepared some of the humorous oil paintings depicting the everyday life of an anonymous superhero that he is known for, including a series he calls Superfly. You can also see some work at Restaurant Smak in Falun all summer. Streets: Andreas Englund // Urban Nation (Berlin)

Painting over the course of five days for Urban Nation, Andreas Englund’s latest creation is a clever take on Rodin’s sculpture The Kiss. Pairing the iconic piece from the French sculptor with his own Voyeur sculpture, the two part mural (at Bülowstraße 93) executed with an expert three-dimensional perspective is a striking piece with commentary on modern society. Take a look at more in-progress photos below… Discuss Andrew England here.

Andreas Englund – “Coffee Break” @ Grand Central Station (Stockholm)

Last week at Stockholm’s Grand Central Station, a new mural from Andreas Englund took shape on the second floor. Commissioned by No18, a business hotel opening in May, the piece painted on the 8 x 3 meter wall features a scene which includes one of the superhero characters that the Swedish artist is known for. In this case, he’s taking a breather with a cup of coffee after dispatching some bad guys. Discuss Andreas Englund here.

Streets: World Roundup (Nov 23 – Jan 18)

Leading off the return of our Streets: World Roundup feature this week is a tribute from Jimmy C of rock icon David Bowie in the Brixton neighborhood where he was born. Londoners used the mural (photo: Tim Ireland/AP) as a makeshift shrine as visitors left gifts, flowers, and mementos at the feet of the image of Bowie as his one of his alter egos, Aladdin Sane. Other works worthy of a look below include: Disk (Stockholm), Andreas Englund (Stockholm), Robert Lazzarini (Miami), Guido Van Helton (Brim), Escif (Valencia), […]

Streets: Andreas Englund for Wall\Therapy (Rochester)

Back in 2011, we did Art Focus feature on Andreas Englund, introducing our readers to his imagery of the everyday life of superheroes and the comedy that ensues when dealing with common situations that happen to us mortals. Fast forward five years and we can see that he just completed a mural for the Wall\Therapy event in Rochester, New York, only his second public wall painted ever. Transferring his character to the large scale, the Swedish artist handles the dimensionality of the piece perfectly. Give […]

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Art Focus: Andreas Englund

For this week’s Art Focus, we bring you the humorous paintings of Swedish artist Andreas Englund. Through his skills of the brush, he answers questions like what happens when a superhero is flying through the air and suddenly needs to use the bathroom?  Or, how do you perform dental procedures on someone who has super teeth? He states “humour can be the carrier of messages that are otherwise hard to convey. For me, it liberates my thoughts and ideas from pretentiousness while at the same […]
