One of the best privately-owned collections in Miami is the de la Cruz Collection, which exhibits pieces from the collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz. During this year’s Basel Week Miami, it featured the Beneath the Surface show, which mainly included works by major American artists that have received attention during the past ten years. Among them were Joe Bradley, Dana Schutz, Tauba Auerbach, Kelley Walker, Wade Guyton, Seth Price, Nate Lowman, Dan Colen, Alex Israel, Rob Pruitt, and more. Each respective artist was […]

Another wall that caught our eyes while around Wynwood Walls during Basel Week Miami was a joint effort from Faith47 and Alexis Diaz, a continuation of the The Art of Collaboration program this year (also see Shep x Cleon Peterson). The mural was stunning in person, mixing South Africa-based Faith47’s female portraiture entwined with the darker illustrative style of the Puerto Rican Diaz. Here are some shots of him putting the finishing touches on the piece as well as a look at the entire image. Full image of the wall via […]
Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). In Miami, the second must-visit fair right behind the Art Basel Miami Beach fair every year is NADA Miami Beach. Focusing on younger galleries and artists, NADA typically contains more surprising finds and new discoveries. Located in the historic Deauville Beach Resort, it included 36 exhibitors this year. Works ranged from art stars such as Israel Lund, Mary Weatherford, and Jon Rafman, to newer ones, such as Darja Bajagić, Mike Bouchet, and Peter Sutherland. Pictured above: solo presentation by Brian Kokoska at East Hampton Shed’s […]
While visiting the NADA fair (more on that later), we stopped to take a look at the signing session at a special booth from Barry McGee for fans that purchased his limited edition Beats Pill. Created in conjunction with Beats By Dre, the product looks great with one of the Bay Area-based artist’s signature characters on the side. More photos can be seen below… Discuss Barry McGee here.
During Basel Week Miami this past week, Galerie Rodolphe Janssen presented a show with new works by Sam Moyer at the M Building in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood Art District. The special exhibition included ten new works and six concrete and marble benches. It also continues her use of marble, mixed with dyed canvas and MDF. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. While walking the Wynwood Walls area, we noticed the always attention-grabbing Anthony Lister (filmed) doing his thing in front of a crowd of people. Using his recognizable loose style, the Australian artist took advantage of the long wall to paint a lady on her side overlaid with some of the frames that he has used before. More photos below… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Anthony Lister here.
While in town for Basel Week Miami, we made sure to head north a little ways to attend the Pulse held at their new location – Indian Beach Park. The tenth edition of the event featured some familiar names as well as many artists new to us. One of these was the sculptural works of Jorge Mayet (seen above) at the Galeria Horrach Moya booth. Enjoy more photos below form the fair… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here.
Taking one of his most recognizable series of works to the next level, Daniel Arsham has created a site specific installation at Locust Projects coinciding with Basel Week Miami. Entitled Welcome to the Future, the excavation site created by the New York-based artist in the gallery’s floor holds thousands of what he calls “future relics,” objects of today’s time but made to look like calcified artifacts through his special technique. The fact that many of these are already obsolete (such as VHS rates, Walkmans, old school […]
Every year during Basel Week Miami, AM always spends some time in the Wynwood district checking out the activity as street and graffiti artists put in the time to beautify the area. For 2014, the predominant facilitators in the area, Wynwood Walls, decided to focus on The Art of Collaboration. One of the standouts was this joint effort painting four sides of a building by Los Angeles-based artists and coworkers Shepard Fairey (featured) and Cleon Peterson. Take a look at how their imagery melded perfectly together in […]
