Preview: Femke Hiemstra – “Let The Devil Wear Black” @ Roq La Rue

On Friday night, the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle will be presenting all new works from Femke Hiemstra (showing alongside Ryan Heshka). Let The Devil Wear Back will feature the Dutch artist’s mixed media paintings as well as black & white drawings that chronicle the stories of mysterious animals (like cats!) as well as come-to-life inanimate objects. These dark fairytale scenes are often rendered on found objects like books and boxes, further enhances each piece’s whimsy and “magical powers.” Discuss this show here.

Next month in Seattle, the Roq La Rue Gallery will be hosting a joint show with Femke Hiemstra and Ryan Heshka entitled Let The Devil Wear Black. Hiemstra has been spending lots of time on an new body of work featuring her anthropomorphized animals and their surreal adventures – all rendered exquisitely. Here are some glimpses of the Dutch artist’s new painting, but plan to attend the opening (scheduled for December 7th) if you are in the area. Discuss Femke Hiemstra here.

The Roq La Rue Gallery has graciously offered up a Femke Hiemstra prints as a giveaway to one of our readers. La Mort En Cadence (edition of 20) is a 11″ x 11″ giclee with the image itself a little over 8″ in diameter and is based on an original from the Dutch painter for the currently running Death and the Maiden group exhibition at the Seattle showspace. Previews: Femke Hiemstra – “The Timid Cabbage” @ Roq La Rue

Tomorrow night, November 11th, Seattle’s Roq La Rue plays host to a new exhibition from Dutch painter Femke Hiemstra. She just showed in LA in July in a three-person show and this time will be showing alongside Ryan Heshka (just like in 2010) with a series of 11 drawings based on the poem The Timid Cabbage by Charles Krafft. Each drawing goes with a stanza, and that stanza is written on the surrounding mat by Femke. More preview images after the jump…

Preview: Femke Hiemstra – “Big Thousands of Golden Flowers” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday night, July 30th, Femke Hiemstra will be joining Audrey Kawasaki, whose works we previewed yesterday, and Deedee Cheriel for a show at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Known for her detailed paintings (often on found objects) of her cast of animal characters set in surreal scenes and compositions, the Dutch painter will be taking viewers of this new body of work on a fairytale journey into mythical worlds of her imagination. Last Saturday, the long time running publication BLAB! completed its makeover with their reoccurring show at Copro Gallery – this time as BLABWORLD. The renamed anthology of comics, illustration, and graphic design from Monte Beauchamp focused on thematic works based on “scenes from THE HEREAFTER” and a nice slate of artists obliged with their unique interpretations.
