POW! WOW! Long Beach finished up the public art for 2018 at the end of last month with another series of great murals and installations for fans of art in the Southern California city. Recently in Honolulu, Kamea Hadar unveiled a mural honoring Barack Obama, a former resident of Hawaii, for his service as the 44th President of the United States. The locally-based painter and also co-lead director of POW! WOW! Hawaii, entitled the mural Hapa, a reference to both the POTUS and artist’s mixed heritage. Earlier this month, the POW! WOW! crew spent a second year (see 2015) at SXSW painting murals for festival goers to enjoy. With this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii winding down over the weekend, it’s now time to take look at some of the finished murals for the annual event. If you attended any of the previous Supersonic Invitational shows, you know you’re in for a treat. We were unable to attend the reception last Saturday night at Spoke Art, but we met up with the curator/art blogger, Zach Tutor, earlier in the day for a look at all the artwork. Kamea Hadar x Tristan Eaton – “Pele, Maila, Hina” Mural

Last month, two veterans of POW! WOW! Hawaii joined forces to collaborate on an indoor installation for Olukai Shoes’ #anywherealoha campaign. Kamea Hadar traveled from the islands to Tristan Eaton’s homebase, Los Angeles, to join him in painting the mural entitled Pele, Maila, Hina. Steeped with symbolism from Hawaii, the piece blended Hadar’s portraiture with Eaton’s signatures patchwork style. Constantly expanding their brand of street art inspired fun based in Hawaii, POW! WOW!’s latest adventure takes them to a satellite event at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.
