Recap: POW! WOW! Long Beach 2018

Streets: Kamea Hadar – “Hapa” (Hawaii)

Recently in Honolulu, Kamea Hadar unveiled a mural honoring Barack Obama, a former resident of Hawaii, for his service as the 44th President of the United States. The locally-based painter and also co-lead director of POW! WOW! Hawaii, entitled the mural Hapa, a reference to both the POTUS and artist’s mixed heritage. POW! WOW! / SXSW ’16: Recap

Earlier this month, the POW! WOW! crew spent a second year (see 2015) at SXSW painting murals for festival goers to enjoy. The roster this year included artists like Esao Andrews, Fafi, Jasper Wong, Jeffrey Gress, Kamea Hadar and Madsteez as well as local muralists like Dave Lowell, Eleanor “Niz” Herasimchuk, Jason Eatherly (seen above), Scott Tarbox, and Wade “Fish” Thompson, See some of what they painted below… Photo credit: Jasper Wong.

If you attended any of the previous Supersonic Invitational shows, you know you’re in for a treat. Kamea Hadar x Tristan Eaton – “Pele, Maila, Hina” Mural

Last month, two veterans of POW! WOW! Hawaii joined forces to collaborate on an indoor installation for Olukai Shoes’ #anywherealoha campaign. Kamea Hadar traveled from the islands to Tristan Eaton’s homebase, Los Angeles, to join him in painting the mural entitled Pele, Maila, Hina. Steeped with symbolism from Hawaii, the piece blended Hadar’s portraiture with Eaton’s signatures patchwork style. Constantly expanding their brand of street art inspired fun based in Hawaii, POW! WOW!’s latest adventure takes them to a satellite event at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.
