Basel Week Miami ’16 / Openings: Fabien Castanier Gallery Popup Exhibition

The Bogota and Los Angeles-based Fabien Castanier Gallery used Basel Week Miami as an opportunity to show their roster of urban artists to the art-thirsty crowd in Wynwood with a popup exhibition. Displayed in two large spaces in the vibrant neighborhood, the exhibition also served as a teaser of what they will are planning for their upcoming Miami gallery location scheduled to open next year. The show was divided between the large space where works by their artists were on display featuring paintings & sculptures with the smaller space reserved for installations. French […]

Releases: Liu Bolin – “Hidden in the City: the Louvre Pyramid (with JR)” Print

In May, we shared with you the amazing takeover by JR (interviewed) at the famous Louvre in Paris where he pasted over the iconic pyramid using photographs of the surrounding structures. Looking at the right angle, it appeared that the pyramid in the main courtyard “disappears” from sight. Who better to collaborate with next in an inception-like project than with China’s disappearing man – Liu Bolin? With both the French and Chinese artist painted over, the two friends (see 2012 collaboration) blended in with the already camoflauged pyramid behind them. This intriguing […]

Liu Bolin – United Nations Global Goals Campaign

Last week, Liu Bolin unveiled a new project he has been working on with the United Nations for the Global Goals Campaign. On September 25th 2015, 193 world leaders will commit to 17 Global Goals to achieve 3 extraordinary things in the next 15 years. End extreme poverty. Fight inequality & injustice. Fix climate change. Per his usual technique, the Chinese artist camouflaged himself against a background of all 193 flags. He further explains – “The name of this new work is called ‘the future’. […]

Upcoming: Liu Bolin – “The Distance To The Eyes” @ Magda Danysz

On May 23rd in Shanghai, Magda Danysz will be hosting a new show from Liu Bolin entitled The Distance To The Eyes, his third solo with the gallery. The series of new photographs which includes the Chinese artist painted over and blending into the scenery (as per his usual technique), see him taking a provocative turn with his work by hacking institutional websites where some images have been changed with him hiding in the image. The clever new series is like a performance inside the worldwide web. He further states – “With […]

Streets: Liu Bolin (New York)

It looks like Chinese artist Liu Bolin was back in New York again recently since the last time he was in the Big Apple when we hung out with him and JR as they worked on an interesting collaborative project together. While in town for his current exhibition at Eli Klein Fine Art, site of his show in 2012 (covered), the photographer and painter decided to stop by 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center, in an area of Queens which has heavy graffiti presence. The walls there will soon be replaced […]

Showing: Liu Bolin – “Hiding In The City” @ Galerie Paris-Beijing (Paris)

Currently showing the Paris branch of Galerie Paris-Beijing is Liu Bolin’s Hiding In The City featuring new examples of the Chinese artist’s signature technique of painting himself to blend in with the background. Last time we spent time with the “Invisible Man” was while he was in New York working on a complex collab (here & here) with French artist JR as well as unveiling a solo show at Eli Klein (covered) last year so it’s nice to see some new work.  You should too if you are in Paris before the show closes […]

Rewind: Dec 17 – Dec 23

With the return of the Rewind article, our first since Basel Week Miami, it only seems appropriate that the featured video is from Art Basel. The footage follows chairman and president of the Calder Foundation, Alexander S.C. Rower, as he explains two prime examples of the famed artist’s work – the white Snow Flurry mobile and an Untitled black piece (never seen before in public). Check the fascinating below as Rower explains the significance and back story of each piece… Other notable videos include: Ann […]

Festival Images (Switzerland)

Starting this weekend in Vevey, Switzerland, the Festival Images kicks off with a series of outdoor and indoor projects as well as associated programming. If you remember, the event (held biannually) was anchored by the Unframed project in 2010 from French street photographer JR. This year, he’s back with Shoot, a giant photo booth creating images for his Inside Out endeavor where participants have to lay down to have their portrait shot (see photostream) and then seeing their photo drift down over 42 feet. Other artists we are excited see work […]
