Upcoming: Atsuko Goto – “An Empty Idol” @ Lower Akihabara

Tonight (September 9th) in Tokyo, Atsuko Goto will be opening a new solo show at Lower Akihabara. Entitled An Empty Idol, the exhibition includes ethereal mix-media paintings from the locally-based artist featuring her signatures portraiture which draws inspiration from the Shinto religion. The subjects of the Japanese artist’s imagery are in tune with nature with birds, butterflies, flora, and animals nesting and interacting with their hair and faces. Discuss Atsuko Goto here.

Releases: James Jean – “Chang’e” Print

In celebration of another Chinese holiday (also see CNY), James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new print for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Entitled Chang’e, the edition will be time limited for 24 hours from 8:00 AM PDT on Thursday, September 15th and ending at 7:59 AM PDT on Friday, September 16th. Openings: Jeff Gillette – “Dismayland Nord” @ Nuart Gallery

One of the events that marked the official opening of this year’s Nuart Festival on the 8th of September was the opening of Jeff Gillette’s solo show at Nuart Gallery. For Dismayland Nord, the Detroit-based artist brought his iconic “dismayland” imagery to the idyllic city of Stavanger in Norway. Releases: Neck Face x Guilty Parties Apparel Collection

The nasty one, Neck Face (interviewed), recently released a new line of clothing with Guilty Parties of Japan featuring his provocative imagery. Ranging from t-shirts, jackets, hoodies, to Hawaiian shirts, all the different designs can be seen at a special release party coming up in Tokyo on September 9th. After the first showing of Slang Aesthetics! in Los Angeles (covered), the traveling retrospective of Robert Williams’ career has since made a stop in June of last year at the Art Museum of Sonoma County. Previews: Jeff Soto – “The Sotofish Society” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Coming up next weekend, Jeff Soto (interviewed) will be returning to Jonathan LeVine Gallery for his fifth solo with the New York showspace. The new exhibition is kind of a nostalgic look back at the imagery that the Southern California-based artist has been sharing with his fans throughout his career – iconic characters like yetis, reapers, robots, walkers, and the Sotofish. Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) recently announced the release of a sculpture from Silent Stage entitled Beyond The Sea.
