Art Focus: Sean Edward Whelan

Based in Japan, Sean Whelan’s medium of choice is pencil drawing which typically center around his fascination temples and shrines. By grouping hundreds of little Japanese buildings, he is able to build complex amalgamations forming figurative shapes and ideas. Previews: Sylvia Ji – “Gilded Roses” @ Corey Helford

This Saturday, December 17th, Sylvia Ji (interviewed) will be transporting her fans to another time and place when she opens Gilded Roses at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. In this new body of work, her portraiture takes a new direction with the ornamentation and costumes of a bygone era taken center stage featuring “explosions of lace, feathers, silks, satins, glinting jewels” mirrored by as her choice of palette utilizing jewel tones. Releases: Mia Araujo – “Sleeping Sickness” Print

Tomorrow afternoon, December 15th, at 1pm (Pacific Time), Mia Araujo (interviewed) will be releasing her Sleeping Sickness print in two editions, both signed and numbered. The more limited version will be larger at 16″ x 24″, priced at $150, and in a run of 25.  The smaller one (8″ x 12″) will be limited to 75 and cost $65. Art Focus: Jose Luis Carranza

The artist we have chosen to share with you for this week’s Art Focus is Jose Luis Carranza. The Peruvian figurative painter trained at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Peru where he received education on classical techniques and then moved on to Europe to further learn from studying works of the old European masters. His portraiture features a striking wide-eyed gaze, bold use of color, thick brushstrokes, and references to both biblical and Incan symbols. Teaser: Casey Weldon – “Groty” @ Gallery 1988 (Venice)

Tomorrow night (December 8th) in Venice, California, Casey Weldon will be presenting a new set of works at Gallery 1988. Groty will be the first solo show in Los Angeles for the Brooklyn-based painter and will feature more of his surreal portraiture that we have enjoyed in various group shows up to this point. Over the weekend, Stephen Webster (located in Beverly Hills) opened up their 2nd floor gallery space with an exhibition curated by the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring the work of Ray Caesar (interviewed), the evening centered around the murder mystery theme during the special event.
