Teaser: Mark Dean Veca C.O.L.A. Fellowship Exhibition

Oh Yeah! Here is a little teaser for the upcoming C.O.L.A. Fellowship exhibition in May at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Each year the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) awards Individual Artist Fellowships to thirteen exemplary midcareer visual, performing and literary artists and our friend Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) was chosen as one of the recipients. Openings: Erik Sandberg – “Get Pretty Now” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Looks like Erik Sandberg’s hairy children are all grown up. His show Get Pretty Now opened alongside Ray Caesar’s solo (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery last weekend featuring his colorful creatures created through his special mixed media technique. As you will see, his new body of work looks more mature and rich in content as well as some pieces taking his imagery in a new direction. More opening pics after the jump…

So, it looks like Adam Wallacavage is hard at work setting up for his show in Sao Paulo, Brazil at Choque Cultural. Here you can see the gallery from the back with one of his signature octopi chandeliers ready to go. Make sure you check out a studio visit and interview that our friends at Hi-Fructose conducted with the Philadelphia-based artist to catch more glimpses of the fantastic sculptural pieces he has in store for this show. LA Art Show: Murals from Andrew Hem, Chor Boogie, and Shark Toof

For several days while the Los Angeles Art Show was in town, Andrew Hem’s (interviewed), Chor Boogie, and Shark Toof were hard at work working on some large mural pieces. Interested attendees were treated to some extended live painting as each artist worked on some signature imagery for their enjoyment. As part of a two person exhibition on tap next weekend at David B. Smith Gallery, Laura Ball will bring her animal imagery to Denver in striking fashion. Opening Friday, January 28th, New Works (teased) will highlight a series of the California artist’s watercolor works on paper, where colorfully rendered landscapes are set upon stark white backdrops thus sharpening the drama of the scenarios. Last night, Toronto-based artist Ray Caesar’s “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” premiered in New York at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new body of work, which seems to have a more personal meaning this time around, features Caesar’s signature use of 3D modeling and animation programs where he painstakingly builds up his porcelain-skinned female characters and stages them in detailed environments.
