Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

It’s time to start winding down our Basel Week Miami coverage here on AM with another look at the PULSE art fair (highlights here). We’ve already shared photos from a couple booths there (Joshua Liner & Jonathan LeVine), and there is a look at a third booth – LeBasse Projects. We’ve touched on the work of Kazuki Takamatsu before here on AM in a couple group shows, but seeing an entire series of works at the Gallery Tomura booth at SCOPE Miami (highlights here) really piqued our interest. The Japanese artist based in Sendai combines the use of computer imaging with traditional techniques to create eerie ghostlike characters through the medium of acrylic and gouache. During our stroll through the seemingly endless array of booths and artwork during Art Basel in Miami, we were stopped dead in our tracks by the solo from the late Jiro Takamatsu at McCaffrey Fine Art. The influential Japanese artist was known as a writer, sculptor, painter and printmaker with this showing focusing in on his famous shadow pieces. After posting up the photos from Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo during this year’s SCOPE art fair in Miami, it’s now time to share the other artist featured in the Thinkspace booth – Brian Viveros. While bringing you a look at the Fresh Basel exhibition (curated by The Hole / Kathy Grayson) held at the the historic 1920’s waterfront Villa Vecchia estate during Basel Week Miami, we mentioned that there would be special live performances held throughout the showing.
