For the currently showing Changwon Sculpture Biennale, Swedish artist Michael Johansson (featured) was invited to create an installation at Yongji Park. Unable to travel to Korea because of the pandemic, the sculptor known for his real life Tetris-like installations, had to design the piece from afar and then supervise the sourcing of local objects and assembly of the artwork. Michael Johansson – “Shades and Variables” @ Galleri Andersson/Sandström (Stockholm)

A couple month ago, the Stockholm location of Galleri Andersson/Sandström hosted new work from Swedish artist Michael Johansson (featured). Continuing his recent spate of showings in Europe, Shades and Variables featured works that he has become known form. Color coded Tetris-like cubes constructed perfectly from everyday items, an installation wall of tightly fitted components, and his play on toy kits filled the space. One of the satellite fairs during Basel Week Switzerland is the always quality SCOPE Art Fair. Although, this venue lacks the blue-chip luster of the main event (covered), we always find many familiar faces and intriguing works at this fair. Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. Studio Visit: Michael Johansson

Earlier this year, our EU correspondent Henrik Haven headed over to visit Michael Johansson’s studio in Malmø. The Swedish artist was in the midst of preparing for his show Familar Abstractions that just ended at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway (more on this soon). Famous for his hued fabricated cube assemblage made from everyday objects, Johansson’s space was understandably organized by careful color coding. Showing: Michael Johansson – “Still Lifes” @ Flat Gallery

Currently showing at the Flat Gallery in Milan is a solo from Sweden-based artist Michael Johansson entitled Still Lifes. On view through February 24th, the exhibition features a continuation of the conceptual artist’s three-dimensional work that deals with ideas of space and form. The re-purposing of everyday objects into perfect cubes (among other sculptural installations) arranged by different hues strikes a visually intriguing balance throughout the showspace.
