Last month, the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin opened a new solo show from Mr. entitled Sweeet! This time, blending his anime-inspired imagery with Western street art and graffiti references, his new paintings were an impressive sight for his fans in the city-state. Along with a large showstopper, the collection of works also included more modestly-sized pieces. Take a look at an interview here as well if you are interested in more insight into the exhibition. AM last attended a comprehensive show from Japanese artist Mr. about this time last year in New York (covered), so it’s nice to see that it is time for another solo exhibition. Held this time closer to home at the Galerie Perrotin’s Hong Kong branch and set to open on October 4th, Sweet! will feature his acrylic on canvas works of preadolescent girls often seen in Japanese sub-culture from manga, anime, to video games. It seems the former assistant to Murakami has also imbued some Western street […]

Here are some of the highlights for us including a huge piece from Mr. (seen above), different versions of the new Murakami sculpts, a section dedicated to Yayoi Kusama sculptures, and much more. The […]

On Thursday, Kaikai Kiki artist Mr. returned for a second showing with New York’s Lehmann Maupin Gallery. The former protégé of Takashi Murakami put forth a more serious body of work entitled Metamorphosis – Give Me Your Wings that was reflected in a dense installation that literally littered the space with common pop & household objects. At the center of the exhibition space was a gigantic caterpillar created by these items, which is intended to convey the current state of Japan’s metamorphosis in contrast to the perceived […]

Not only will the former protégé of Takashi Murakami be exhibiting his latest series of paintings, he will also be presenting a large installation in the middle of the main gallery that reflects on the catastrophic nuclear disaster in his country, voicing the post-traumatic anxiety and frustration of his people. This installation, which represents a more serious artistic direction […]
