Upcoming: Mark Ryden x American Ballet Theatre – “Whipped Cream”

With his major retrospective still showing in Spain (covered), Mark Ryden (interviewed) has unveiled a side project he has been working on for quite some time. For the past year, the American artist has been busy designing the costumes and sets for a new ballet called Whipped Cream by renowned choreographer Alexei Ratmansky for the American Ballet Theater. Showing: Marilyn Minter – “Pretty/Dirty” @ Orange County Museum of Art

Earlier this month, Marilyn Minter opened a new show at the Orange County Museum of Art entitled Pretty/Dirty. The retrospective features over 25 paintings made between 1976 and 2015, three video works, and several photographs that highlight the American artist’s focus on society’s obsession with feminine beauty. Included are her iconic and lush works that focus on various eroticized parts of the female body like the feet, lips, and eyes. The exhibition will be on view through July 10th. Streets: Eine (Santa Ana)

A couple months ago in Santa Ana, California, Ben Eine painted a mural utilizing his signature text-based imagery with the words “Suenos Revolucionarios” or “Revolutionary Dreams.” Arranged by Marcas Gallery, the piece was considered by the British artist as one of his best walls in the last few years and it’s not hard to see why. Upcoming: Dan Quintana & Karen Hsiao – “Perverse Foil” @ Marcas Gallery

On August 2nd, the Marcas Gallery in Orange County will be opening Perverse Foil, a collaborative exhibition between painter Dan Quintana and photographer Karen Hsiao. Admirers of each other’s work since 2009, the two artist decided to collaborate on a show when they noticed similarities between Quintana’s figures and Hsiao’s models. Along with individual works, they will also be presenting joint creative efforts (like the one seen below) including Hsiao shooting her subjects live in front of an elaborate backdrop created by Quintana and hour before the opening […]

Openings: “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

Over the weekend, AM stopped by the Orange County Musuem of Art to take a look at the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial that just opened, in particular Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) installation. Along with some paintings he submitted, the Los Angeles-based artist also painted a room with his signature patterns and added some interesting adornments. Upcoming: Mark Dean Veca for “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

At the end of the month (June 30th), the Orange County Musuem of Art will be opening their 2013 California-Pacific Triennial. This survey of contemporary art draws from a cross-section of countries from throughout the Pacific Rim and will include a diverse list of artists this year including the locally-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed). Streets: James “DALEK” Marshall (Corona Del Mar)

Continuing to produce public displays of his geometric mastery, James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed) recently painted another mural at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar. Orange County is kind of ground zero for fans of the American artist’s work because of his affiliation with Hurley – leading to many shows, product lines, and associated events in and around Hurley Space. Preview: James “Dalek” Marshall – “STABILIMENTUM” @ Hurley H SPACE Gallery

Tomorrow night (July 31st), in celebration of the US Open of Surfing 2012 (also see PUSH’s effort) and launch of the Phantom Fuse boardshort, Hurley presents STABILIMENTUM, an immersive new installation from James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed). A couple Fridays ago, Orange County was treated to a captivating installation by James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) at the Hurley Space Gallery. Immersed in all directions by the New York-based artist’s geometric creations, viewers were also introduced to a matching line of Phantom 4D Board Shorts as well as some surfboards and bikes.
